Germany w/end away ?

Depends what you're after really.
Most of the posters on here have mentioned the usual places in the west, of which Hamburg is by far the best (although Munich is nice too).
Why not try the east?
If you want culture, Dresden's Altstadt is beautiful, and the Neustadt in the evening is kicking. A beautiful walk across the river, too.
Berlin is always worth a visit.
If you want scenery, you could try the Spreewald near the Polish border, or the Sächsiche Schweiz between Dresden and the Czech Republic.
Görlitz and Bautzen are also nice, not far from Poland. Leipzig can be done in a day. Or you could do a little tour of the cities, fly to Dresden from Manchester, hire a car and see a number of sights.
As a general rule, the east is cheaper than the west, but can cost more in flights.
And don't worry about your German, the locals are more than happy to speak English!
