Gigs Thread

Peter Hook playing Parr Hall in Warrington next year. Not sold out yet and great venue for them.

I’ve got The K’s next Friday (Academy) Starsailor the Friday after (Ritz), Noel G (Liverpool Arena) next month, Bunnymen next year (Albert Hall) James (Co-op Arena), Liam Gallagher (Co-op arena) and Starsailor again and now Peter Hook both at Parr Hall.

Was hoping for another Neighbourhood Weekender but they have cancelled it next year for some reason.

Got the possibly dubious pleasure of watching Billy Strings on Friday. My son is a fan and bought a couple of tickets but couldn’t find a taker for the second so I thought I’d give it a go
Thatll be great...would love to hear what you think afterwards

I had got it into my head that Billy Strings was playing the Academy 3, basically the smaller of the three (four if you count club academy) venues which is where I saw Midlake a couple of months ago. In fact he was at the main venue and although there were apparently tickets available on the day there was a big crowd and I realised this guy is a big deal. Quite a mixed audience as well, not all beardy types in check shirts…

I have to say he doesn’t play my type of music at all and there were times I just felt like I was at one big hoe down. But the guy can play guitar and his band are incredibly tight. I don’t know the songs apart from the ones we played in the car on the way in but there were some extended musical interludes that were pretty phenomenal to be fair and they were the bits I enjoyed the most. My son on the other hand had been hankering for more songs, less extended jams/improvisations or whatever they were.

The crowd loved it and there were one or two songs I’d happily add to a playlist. There were points they had me thinking of the Band, not a band I’m into in a big way but did open a bit of discussion with my lad on the way home and we played a few of their tracks, interspersed with more Billy Strings and I was pleasantly surprised my son had already heard some of them.

I wouldn’t go and see Billy Strings again but as a bit of a punt and setting aside any preconceived notions it was fun and I can see why he is so revered. It was also good to have a shared experience with my younger son who has no interest in football, all the great City memories of recent years have been shared with my older son who has a season ticket with me.

I saw the set list from last night as he posted it on his instagram….and there were quite a lot of tunes I don’t know….but I think his “thing” is the live jamming he does…rather than just playing “the hits”. He’s a massive stoner and big grateful dead fan….so he’s always gonna be a bit of a jam band.
Glad it was a positive experience for you :)

Not a live gig but will be watching Blondie night on BBC2 tonight including a live in Glasgow 1979 gig.
Moved to the North East, over 2 years ago.
Was worried that I'd miss out on my live music, as thought Manchester is incomparable to any other British city for the quality, amount and variety of venues.
But, it has made me go to see smaller, newer artists in a (thankfully) large amount of different size and styled venues.
Granted, now travel further (outside of Newcastle to Sunderland & Stockton for example).
But, now go to see younger, newer artists I probably wouldn't have gone to see in Mcr.
Also, there's a lot less hipster types up here with more grumpy old gets...
