I had got it into my head that Billy Strings was playing the Academy 3, basically the smaller of the three (four if you count club academy) venues which is where I saw Midlake a couple of months ago. In fact he was at the main venue and although there were apparently tickets available on the day there was a big crowd and I realised this guy is a big deal. Quite a mixed audience as well, not all beardy types in check shirts…Thatll be great...would love to hear what you think afterwards
I saw the set list from last night as he posted it on his instagram….and there were quite a lot of tunes I don’t know….but I think his “thing” is the live jamming he does…rather than just playing “the hits”. He’s a massive stoner and big grateful dead fan….so he’s always gonna be a bit of a jam band.I had got it into my head that Billy Strings was playing the Academy 3, basically the smaller of the three (four if you count club academy) venues which is where I saw Midlake a couple of months ago. I have to say he doesn’t play my type of music at all and there were times I just felt like I was at one big hoe down. But the guy can play guitar and his band are incredibly tight. I don’t know the songs apart from the ones we played in the car on the way in but there were some extended musical interludes that were pretty phenomenal to be fair and they were the bits I enjoyed the most. My son on the other hand had been hankering for more songs, less extended jams/improvisations or whatever they were.
The crowd loved it and there were one or two songs I’d happily add to a playlist. There were points they had me thinking of the Band, not a band I’m into in a big way but did open a bit of discussion with my lad on the way home and we played a few of their tracks, interspersed with more Billy Strings and I was pleasantly surprised my son had already heard some of them.
I wouldn’t go and see Billy Strings again but as a bit of a punt and setting aside any preconceived notions it was fun and I can see why he is so revered. It was also good to have a shared experience with my younger son who has no interest in football, all the great City memories of recent years have been shared with my older son who has a season ticket with me.
