Gillingham v Manchester City 1999

just think guys and gals, our newer fanbase will probably never experience the relegations we have all sat through. The lowest ebb in our history when relegated to the second division. The endless pisstaking from rival supporters. Sitting there in 1999 and watching united win the champions league in the last minute, and what were we doing? playing a play-off final against gillingham...... sometimes i really do have to slap myself at how far we have come. I remember being in the pub with my mates and id say stuff like "oh we gotta really tricky away match against Macclesfield this weekend".......... or "we're gonna stuggle today coz Sun Jihai is out injured".........................i bet 90% of youngsters these days havent even heard of the legend that is Sun Jihai.....................now look at us! playing barca and bayern and madrid in the top competition in world football!
I was speaking to a girl recently, a spurs fan, and she had no idea that we were in the second division as recently as 1999 and still not even in the premier league in 2001! she honestly thought we have always been rich and challenging for trophies!

I watched this game in my local with a few of my mates. One of the most amazing comebacks in footballing history. You cant put a price on games like this. the emotions you go through. We all knew it was a must win game and by hook and by crook we managed to win it!! We must never forget days and games like this.

At 2-0 down I was looking forward to romping the division next season due to the current good since boxing day.

I think we would have been premier league for a year longer (i.e. 2001-02 onwards) if we hadn't go promoted, and the match was made to be more important than it was after the event. City were set up to get promoted sooner or later.

Not according to Bernstein we wasn't. The players who were relegated from Division One were in the main kept on for that year in Division Two and if we had failed to get promoted first time some would have to have gone to reduce the wage bill.

Would the 30000 have still attended games for a second year?

Ifs and buts

Not sure the game has been made bigger than it was. It was a huge game for the club and the fans. It kept some belief and hope going

He said this after the event which is what I am on about - the spirit of 1999 silver kit in 2000 etc, it was grasped to promote the club.

There was a big wage cutting exercise when we went down with big earners leaving and Pollock being the top earner. The QPR 2-2 game must have been the worst game ever for city then? All promotions and relegations are important, but this one has been 'promoted' better.

Can't agree with that Corky.
Had we lost that game I'm pretty sure as a club we would have been staring oblivion directly in the face.
I genuinely don't think we can ever over estimate the importance of Dickov's goal and the final result that day.

just seeing the highlights again made me remember - when Paul Dickov missed his penalty but put the rebound in my missus was cheering as she thought it counted - didn't go down at all well around where we were sat

Agree mate
Probably a far more important goal than Sergio's...
