Give me an argument against this statement

"Mark Hughes has spent almost a season and a half at Manchester City, with tremendous support from the club, and has managed to constantly take players and, over this period, make them perform way below the sum of their parts. This is not a sign of a capable manager."

I would take issue with your last sentence as your statement should end on a positive not a negative declaration ie 'This is a sign of an incompetent buffoon who should be restricted to managing football teams in the Championship'

Call me picky

I reckon we needed a Hughes type manager to do the dirty work, clear out the deadwood, lay the foundations, and basically make us into a club that a top quality manager could see himself managing. He has done this quite well imo. The question was whether Hughes was going to prove himself to be that top quality manager. You would have to say at the moment the answer to that question looks like being no. With this in mind, I'd suggest that Hughes is walking a very fine line, and if a top quality manager should become available (Mourinho,Hiddink), then he could be for the chop very soon if results/performances don't improve.

The thing that kills me is that I have put my neck on the line (literally at Ewood last season) and stuck up for Hughes, but now I've had enough. He's let me down and I'm now convinced he isn't good enough. I suspected as such but now I know for certain. The problem is, even though I know he isn't good enough, what does the club do? If we sack him now who on earth do we bring in? He's got us over a barrel and I think he knows it.

On the way out today I was arguing with a lad who was saying "12 games, we've only played 12 games and lost once!" I mean, if you want that mate and you can't see a problem then fair enough. In isolation the performance was good and the result unfair, but taken in context there's something not right. Hughes, although he won't admit it, was terrified to change things at 1-1 in case we lost. Much in the same way he was terrified to go for the jugular from the off at Anfield. He knows he is one defeat away from humiliation so is taking the 'easy' option every week. This could be the biggest non-entity of a season in the history of man if we're not careful.

So, what do we do lads? Hughes isn't the best man for the job, but is there a realistic candidate available at present? Hiddink? Is that realistic? I honestly don't know. What I do know is that I'm on the fence no more.

Just gutted i so want it all to ok went there today praying for a great performance a great atmosphere and some robbi magic, didnt want to get home and read more and more doom and gloom but something needs to happen we cant keep hoping results go for us , to score a deflected goal and create fook all against hull is simply not good enough does that mean change of manager ,well i for one am not sure but a change of tactics yes it feels like we are playing with 10 men somehow............GUTTED>>>>>>>>>>>>

the argument against that statement goes something like this:

hughes will be judged by his achievements at the end of the season, not a third of the way through it. there is still plenty of time for us to 'turn it around'. we could easily match last seasons efforts in the second half of the season and finish 5th.

and I'd still get rid of him in a flash.

he is not entertaining us. he is not developing youth. he is not pursuing a sophisticated tactical philosophy that will in time provide the blueprint for this club for 30 years. he is not a maverick who has taken brave choices but been unlucky. he's out of his depth and will continue to insult the good name of this club by sending out the most consistently disorganised and ruderless team in the premiership.
