Something very stranged happened Sunday in London. 70000 fans were entertained at the emirates stadium! Doesn’t happen on a match day lol

Fantastic crowd and atmosphere there for the Artic Monkeys

The wall to wall media obsession with one festival is in full swing I see.

Meanwhile the grassroots music sector is on its arse.

Sack off watching the Glastonbury coverage, and go and visit your local independent music venue.

Pay a fiver, buy a pint and watch a local band.

Arctic Monkeys are headlining Glastonbury. Without grassrooots music venues that band wouldn’t exist.

Worked with them 2 weeks back, they were here in Ireland. I ve been a big fan for ages, I thoroughly enjoyed the set but it was only 30mins long. They brought two female vocalists plus a drummer to work with the main trio. Amazing, i was buzzin. But as i said i m a huge fan.

Agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment of that aside from the last point. Arctic Monkeys were pretty much the first band that got popular from the internet and MySpace rather than gigging.

They did indeed become famous through the internet, the first place wasn’t really MySpace, it was when their early demos were shared around indie music forums, the big one being the Libertines forum.

I saw them 10+ times in those days in small grassroots venues.

They would not be where they are had the network of small music venues been there to support them and act as community hubs for fans.

(I’ve worked in the music industry for 15 years).

Nooooo Bluedot sold out a couple of years ago.

Maybe I'm a victim of going to bluedot since it's inception but it's now just a large market zone where they sell everything you don't need.

When they start giving the commercial areas street names you know its a sell out.

But just cos it's not my cup of tea doesn't mean its the same for everyone.

Fair enough, I just didn’t think they were the best example of it. Like I said, I agree fully with your point.

I haven’t been to Glastonbury for a long time, I tend to do the smaller festivals nowadays (I’ve been to End of the Road the last few years). Quite a few of the bands I’ve discovered there, I’ve subsequently gone to see at those smaller venues when they’ve toured. You’re right that most either at Glastonbury or watching it will be either sticking to the main stages or not go to much outside of it, I have a few friends that still just do that.

I saw them at that point and haven't since even though I'm a big fan. It was amazing to see the young kids at these gigs knowing all the words to the songs even though they hadn't been released yet. Tbh I think it was a mixture of both things but absolutely take your point regarding small venues. Seen some of the best gigs at those sort of places. Having lived in the Midlands for a number of years there was plenty in Brum and Wolves

She used to be a part of a indie/electro duo. Seems to be excelling on her own. Hope she has rights to play that song live, coz its a tune ^^^^^^^

My first few gigs were in Wolverhampton, Echobelly in 1993 was the first band I saw live, then Black Grape both at the Wulfrun. I live near Nottingham now and it’s great for music venues.
