Well today was a day I shall remember for the rest of my days. My very first hole in one. 17th hole, 125 yards over water. 51 degree gap wedge and it went straight the hole, pitched 5 feet short, released and rolled straight into the centre of the cup. Shame about the 16 preceding holes.

I’m off to get pissed now (and yes that green is in an awful state but we’ve had two weeks of sandstorms and 45 degree heat so they took a battering).
Congrats mate!!! I’ve only made one, ten years back, but it was a great thrill. Framed the card and the ball. Seen two more among players in my groups over the years including one my buddy called mid-air (he was scratch or near enough). Had two full-swing hole outs, one at Castle Stuart, which were pretty fun.

Cheers bud. It was in the weekly newsletter and I’ve had a handful of clients text me and say I spend too much time on the course.

lol. I could of been accused of that at one time. In the past I very often played everyday and gone out practicing on the putting green and short game area after 6pm (during Summer). I live about 500 yards from Worsley Park Marriott which is handy. My sons back garden backs onto the 7th tee, Christ the wife would never have seen me.

You could say I was addicted

Ha. Yeah I’m very much in that phase still. In Doha I’m about 6 minutes away from the course but where we’re moving to for my wife’s work, I’ll be about 200m (literally) from the golf and country club entrance so I’ll be able to cut down on that commute. The only issue is that it backs on to the beach and they pride themselves on having a water hazard on every hole. So it’s probably going to be very expensive in terms of balls.

Beach, sea, and sun. I`m jealous mate. What`s the name of the course so I can have a look and let my jealousy run free. 8-)

Don't really follow golf at all, but watched the highlights of the U.S. Open last night. Wow, Torrey Pines — what a magnificent place to practice any kind of sport.
Also, for the first time, watched the highlights of Tiger Woods' first Augusta Masters. There are certain athletes, you don't need to know anything about the sport (although it helps, obviously), you just grasp straight away that you're in the realm of transcendent greatness.

I am looking forward to see the British open. Mostly as its local and I know Paul ( head greenkeeper/course manager ) has worked miracles to bring the old course back to where it should be.
Last time I visited Paul he had a program going on of spraying of all the rye grass that had creeped in over the decades. Turning the links back to its natural links grasses, it looked fantastic. He was treating the whole course to get rid of the rye grass !.

Hope everything goes well for Paul and his team, the unsung heroes of golf ;)

Little story when the open was played a st George's after a long break back in the late 70's early 80's not sure which year. My kid brother was a greenkeeper there, the pros would turn up about a week early to play and to get to know the course.
He said only one pro would ever talk to the greenkeepers the others didnt even say good morning. One pro that always went out of his way to chat was Ballesteros. Think Ballesteros gave them little keep sakes like his glove etc.My kid brother said he was a lovely bloke would always speak with the greenkeepers the rest were just up their own arse. And the greenkeepers were the lowest of the low.

This had two effects one was Ballesteros got all the tips about how to play the course if the wind was from the north or west etc. On the final day of practice some of the other pros were asking the greenkeepers about how the play the course if the wind was from the north etc. The greenkeepers took great delight in giving them false information lol

I had a hole in one at the 14th at Ashton Under Lyne in 2005 on a charity golf day, I won a weeks holiday for two to Dubai, we went for the Dubai Cup Horse Race meeting and stayed at (I think)the Rotan hotel, cost me a fortune in spending money!

Up by Loch Lomond for a week surrounded by great courses but not a chance of getting a round in. Still it’s not all bad and definitely inspired to return with the clubs
There’s a stunning private course right on the loch.. invitation only if you’re not a member.. I’d love to play there.. Just once

We found ourselves at the gate by accident in the Motorhome while looking for our camp site

I keep popping in and out of this thread to see what's going on in the world of golf.

I am from the maintenance side of golf which is in huge decline. Head greenkeepers walking away , or being made redundant and replaced by their deputies on deputies wages.
The maintenance budgets being slashed, and maintenance teams being reduced by half on some courses.

The maintenance side of golf has huge problems, lack of young greenkeepers coming in and older experience ones looking to get out.

Reading your post it doesnt seem to be impacting on your enjoyment or standard of course yet.

I guess that's a few years down the line ! Most courses will be ok for about 2 years without the right maintenance, experience staff or the correct numbers of staff. Than it just falls of a cliff and takes decades to get back.

Enjoy your golf but makes sure your course isnt cutting corners on maintenance, experience staff etc :)
One of our Greenkeepers is a 3 handicapper, he works there, plays there and drinks there, I think he goes home to sleep.

I`ve had 3 Hole in one`s, 1 on the 2nd at Hesketh in a comp. 1 on the 4th at Birchwood in a club comp, 1 on the 6th at Stand in a friendly game. The lowest I played off was 5.7. I got to that 3 times but between 6 and 7 was the handicap I was off the longest.

My son who`s been off +1 has only had 1 hole in one and that was at Gullane. It was the worst shot I`ve ever seen him play but it went in the hole.

It`s just luck to a large extent.
I’d be made up with a 2 for the ball sweep …

just joined a local club after playing as a guest for years… Off 28.8 but I’ll get that down now I’m playing regularly

A mate of mine from my RAF days is the Dealer Principal at Harley Davidson in Doha… he’s been there years… Lucky sod

I was never that sort of greenkeepers lol 9 times out of 10 come 2 pm I was off out on my bike, until the kids came along than it was home or school pick up ;).

I really miss greenkeeping but I couldnt take the club politics or the lack of knowledge from golfers about the course.

I think even at st George's Paul employs two ex head greenkeeper who got fed up the the committee etc

Stick at it, my advice is to have lessons but spaced out and not all in a few days.

A member of our society had the "gammy" grip, right hand over left, he kept slicing his tee shots, one of the lads kept saying go and get a lesson. In the end he did, the pro watched him hit a few balls and tried him to switch his grip, he was even worse. The pro took him in the shop, gave him us money back and said:

"Theres fuck all I can do for you"

He's given up the game now.

My first hole in one was on the 6th at Warrington when I was 17 and very nearly repeated it on the 9th, left ìt hanging on the lip. My dad who I was playing with was speechless. I've gone onto have 6 more over the next 40 years.
On the tee on the 13th there's a plaque to commemorate a real one in a million occurrence. In 1976 another father and son game led to one following the other in for holes in one.

Really? That’s a seriously shit pro if they did that

My Dad played for many years off mid teens handicaps playing Kacky handed. When a new pro came to our club he convinced him that in fact he was left handed. He changed. After a couple of years, he was in single figures

Got three lessons booked.. the first on the 9th of July… I started hitting the ball better after I’d booked them ;-)

I’m left handed but I’ve always played with right handed clubs… I don’t think I could change now
