Golf Thread

A 20 handicapper won the 9 holes stableford yesterday with 26 points. A single figure has zero chance these days with so many people gaming the system.
Set up your own competition group, invite non-bandits to be part of it. People can still put cards in and all of the prize money goes back to the competitors.

Fast greens are not the issue. Most of the members think they pure every shot which they dont mishit about 8 of 10.They never take enough club. They also never seem to have heard of course managment.Get the ball in play and plot around.
know how far you hit each club with no wind.I find since getting custom fitted and knowing how far each club goes takes all stupid shots away ie going for par 5s that you would have to hit the greatest 3 wood of the deck u have ever hit.
Since playing to distances my handicap has stabilised between 12 and 14.Still have horrendous holes but nowhere as many as previously.
The greenkeepers do a fantastic job and are qualified to know what they are doing. Most members play once a week with the wrong clubs no warm up.Where i play the main gripe are greens to fast.Pin positions our greenkeepers use the whole green one member thinks they should be either on the front middle or back and always in the centre.,bunkers too much sand bunkers should have sand. For me the commitees should be replaced by the greenkeeping team.
Committees are elected by the members to have the club run the way they want, the greenkeepers are there to set up the course as the members want within reason.
Our previous greenkeeper who was completely out of his depth set the course up so difficult that upto a third of the competition would have a no return in the Saturday medal. Just miss the fairway and it's a fair chance it's a lost ball.
Regarding pin positions there are guidelines that they must follow which applies to all levels of competition whether amateur or professional.
The first half of your post hits the spot, most amateurs leave their brain in the carpark before the round when it comes to course management. Knowing your yardages, not playing at every pin, not short siding yourself on a missed green, etc defines how well a golfer will score and is so important.
For anyone interested there's a YouTuber called Jon Sherman whose channel discusses course management and the mental side of the game, it's very good.

There's no limit. I noticed in the women's competition there was someone with a handicap of 65, WTF.
Haha joke that.I saw the scores at our Seniors Open this week Pairs better ball. 49 won it , 2nd 48 . Me and my partner had 41 points at Warrington a few weeks back and we thought we had done well .

Those of you who are members of clubs . What is the max handicap allow for your majors ? Ours is 26
We don't have majors, most knockouts are 28.

The club championships are scratch events.
The finals are this weekend.

Interesting interview with Justin Rose last night at the BMW. He has a personal RV that somebody drives to every tournament he plays in. It’s nothing to do with fitness, so no gym type stuff, but everything to do with recovery. It’s got ice baths, steam room, infra red something or other, oxygen tent etc. God knows how big it is but it’s amazing the lengths players go to and how much more professional sportsmen and women have to be to succeed in any sport these days.

All that just to take 6 hrs to play 18 holes it must be so knackering walking a few miles to hit a ball. 6 hrs to walk a few miles. Our council litter pickers walk for 8hrs a day and probably cover more mileage

Do you not have Board competitions ect Captains weekend?
We have quite a few competitions but there isn't really much of a pecking order.
The only competition winners that go on a board are the Club champions.
You may get your name engraved on various cups and shields but outside the Club championship and the stroke play event to get into it both of which are scratch competitions none are really any more or less prestigious.

That's my home club, hope you enjoyed it. I play the occasional seniors open to play somewhere different for a reasonable fee. Recently played Fairhaven in Lytham which was really good.
49 points is taking the piss, at least it'll be recorded on their handicap record. It's always gone on though, I can remember people 30 years ago who entered home competitions just to get their handicap up so they could win in the Manchester Alliance.

We all loved Warrington. It was in great condition, greens & Tee boxes very good . One of the members said greens were slower than usual, they had let the grass grow a little more than usual because of such dry weather, scared to lose them , they were very true and fast enough for me . Got Lymm Senior open on Tuesday, another new course, then The Hallamshire on bank holiday with mates

Played Lymm many times mostly in team matches, nice course, borders the MSC, so pretty flat.

Hallamshire has (or did have a while back) a bunch of Matt Fitzpatrick paraphernalia including a replica US Open trophy. It's quite a hilly course.

My club's club championship is 36 holes played on one day and is restricted to single figure players. It's a format that works well.

They’re playing for $10 million with lift, clean and place!

Since that PGA documentary on Netflix? I’ve always thought Scheffler came across as a pretty decent guy but some of his interviews in the past few months have been odd, arrogant and sometimes downright rude. He must know he’s currently head and shoulders above anyone in the game - he needs to show a bit of humility. I can see him being a right twat in the Ryder Cup.
