Gout

Over the last month I’ve had the two worst gout attacks I’ve ever had and for the first time it was in my ankles rather than my big toe

the first one in my left ankle was bad enough but a few days after I recovered from that I had an attack in my right ankle which was horrific

I remember the exact moment it started as I started to get what felt like pins and needles

About 2 weeks down the line I’m only really just starting to recover. There were times when I literally couldn’t put any weight on my foot and had a couple of almost sleepless nights with the pain
You have my sympathy mate, for what it's worth.
It is truely horrendous, I wouldn"t wish it on anyone. I've been there myself, I have quite a high pain threshold, but gout had me in tears at one point.
Allopurinol sorted me out, but I am a bit concerned of the long term effects.
Hope you can get some relief bud.

With anything in life, there will be predisposition and genetic issues and just exceptions in general.

However....give yourself the best chance, thats my point.I can guarantee the vast majority on this thread who are complaining/suffering are doing so because of self cause and abuse of lifestyle.

Mate
dont want to worry you

Im 56 ,Iv had gout from around my early 30's
a couple attacks per year originally
anti inflammatories always worked
over the years its got more frequent
declined going on alopurinol about 10 years ago after i was once given it during an attack
that intensified my gout 10 fold,it scared me ,but i should have taken the advice and started taking alopurinol regular

my gout was always my big toe or toes

3 years ago i got, what i thought was gout in my ankles.
i was off work for 3 months
everyone said it cant be gout for that long, which through my experience I agreed

turns out after 12 months of endless test and xray and blood samples etc

i have now, osteoarthritis in my ankles etc

iv more or less ,got rid of gout attacks by going on alopurinol the last few years, but now,Iv developed
osteoarthritis now

Had it twice and last time was about 9 months ago. As others have said, it is horrendous and the slightly touch on my foot would leave me in absolute agony.

I have this feeling that allopurinol is masking my problem, hence me quizzing @FantasyIreland earlier on about diet etc.(can't thank him enough for his advice).
I only base this on one thing, I didn't take my tablets once, for 24 hours, and the gout came back pretty much straight away.
Therefore I can only assume there maybe other things developing that i'm blissfully unaware of. I'd like to get off allopurinol and see if it can be managed without drugs.

Discuss it with your dr and not from people on here who have never even had it

I was trying to help folk and spent a bit of my time doing so.....
She's had almost every disease ailment and broken bones kbown to womankind pal; )

On a serious note though you do know about health and nutrition and offer some good advice on here.

I've had mild gout about 4-5 times and got prescribed with Naproxen which helped.
I think it was because i was working away, often in remote locations and I
couldn't eat as healthily as i wanted.

I read up on gout and(like you said) changed my diet for the better. Started drinking plenty of bottled water and staying hydrated is key in helping to avoid gout. Same goes in avoiding kidney stones which I've suffered twice. I've never felt pain like it, so bad that if someone had passed me a gun I'd have shot myself!

What causes this, or what are some people's trigger foods? Just being nosey as I like my food but conscious I'm starting to become a bit more tubby around the middle than I ever have been so am making a few lifestyle changes. I've always been self aware but lacked consistency with my diet and training, need to try and sort that out while I'm in control and not after I get a serious health scare.

Is it weather related?

Last winter I had a slight reddening between my big toe joint and nail, bending my toe it felt like it was really stretching and painful, went away but this last week as it's got cooler it's come back.

Is this potentially an early sign of what's to come? I'm active, golf, eat pretty healthy and although I like a drink don't to excess unless on a Wembley trip.

Hoping I've not got years of pain ahead of me.
