Gout

Im 54 and had it for roughly 20 years,my dad had it in his youth and his mum my gran too

I didn't want to start taking alopurinol every day when i was first diagnosed with gout years ago and i regret not doing so so much now,Iv now got osteoarthritis through getting constant gout maybe 6 or 7 times a year for years and my feet are fucked.

over the years Iv tried everything to stop it,except stop drinking, all to no avail, diet ,excersise nothing helped one bit, just the anti inflammatries ,naproxen, arcoxia etc

I nearly died with malaria in 1993 from travelling around east africa and the pain from gout is on a par with malaria imo

i once took alopurinol on a doctors advice while suffering a gout attack around 2010,he should NOT of told me to take them while having an attack,it intensified the initial gout 10 fold, jesus,it was pure utter agony for several weeks

i started taking 100mg last june 2018 and it triggered a mild gout attack but for 1 year now Iv been more or less gout free, and i can drink too ! just the osteoarthritis to deal with now

I've had it on and off for 10 years and isn't linked to my alcohol input that I can make reference to. I always thought it was until I had the worst of my gout episodes 3 months into zero alcohol. My diet is pretty good too.

I think the only thing that is hereditary is your tolerance to Uric acid, which seems to be different for everyone.

Only ever get it in my left toe apart from the worst episode, which lasted 3 weeks and went up my foot.

Sleeping is an absolute nightmare as any touch from partner or even a bed sheet it agony.

Anyway, off for 8 pints and half a cow. What could go wrong?

It’s a terrible pain and I feel for anyone who has the condition, touch wood not had a flare up for a couple of years but I drinks masses of water to flush the urate crystals out, it’s one of those afflictions that people who have never had it snigger at.
My mate has it, ive seen him close to tears when he gets a bad un as he calls it and he's as hard as nails, I wouldn't even tell him to fuck off over the phone.. If he struggles that badly, i can only imagine how bad it must be for sufferers. Anyone who suffers has my utmost sympathy..!

Some funny posts in this thread but boy feels like a surface plate has been dropped on my foot, absolute unabated agony, only had the pain once recently, non positive blood test, x-ray showing arthritis in joint. This time acute pain, plus pronounced veins in leg, had to visit Walk in centre (yeah, right) multi diagnosis from gout, cellulitis to infection, just had the precautionary antibiotics, only recently finished, had slight improvement but coming back with a vengeance. Must be serious, missed out on fishing last week could be the same this week.

Sorry to hear that and I sympathise as a sufferer. Had a 4 week bout earlier this year which is the worst yet for me. My dad recommends Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar (With The Mother) and says he's had no attack in 3 years but I looked online and I think the medical jury is out on its benefits - could be just coincidence. Need to be careful not to take too much as well as it IS an acid, but I'm going to try it. Aldi sell a cheap version which looks identical at a much cheaper price (£2 for 1/2 litre vs £5.50 for Braggs at Holland & Barrett). Also bought some Cherry Nettle tea off Amazon which is okay but can't really taste the cherry. It's supposed to help.

Regarding footwear, the best standard trainers I found for width have been made by Gelert from Sports Direct and they're dirt cheap. Look shit though! I tried some New Balance trainers off a company because they make them in extra width fittings but £125 and worst of all they're New Balance.

someone recommended apple cider vinegar with baking soda & half a lemon with a pint of water to me a few years ago, thought it was a load of bollocks...old wives shite etc but was amazed the effect it had, took a few days to kick in but really cleared it up....

I've had gout and it's bad, not had it as bad as some on here though. My mate really suffers so much so that his hands and feet swell up like elephant man. Rang me during lockdown in agony. Had to go round be to his with a strip on Naproxen.

Worse physical pain I've ever suffered was kidney stones, fuckin' excruciating! I collapsed in my bank a couple of years ago and was writhing around on the floor. If someone had passed me a gun I would have shot myself. Two and a half hours later the ambulance turned up. At the hospital I was maxed out on morphine and still in agony.

Gout and kidney stones are both caused by a build up of calcium and uric acid and there's been some good advice on here so far, not sure if anyone has mentioned avoiding shellfish though including prawns.

Best advice is to drink water and plenty of it. At least 2 litres a day. And a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass not only breaks down uric acid it is also helps burn fat too.

I get it, I've had it in both feet and my knee. its not nice at all!.

my last few bouts have been long lasting but less intense though. since lockdown I've had it in my left foot for about 4 weeks and then the shit moved over to my right root for another 4 weeks!.

I've not had it officially diagnosed by the GP yet so cant get the proper meds. really need to push it. but both my Dad and my Brother get it and have been diagnosed so I know what I have is it.
