Grand Canyon visit

Went to Vegas for the Mayweather v Hatton fight early December 2007.

Hired a hummer for 4 of us, was told the closest Grand Canyon viewing point was about 2 hours away. Stopped at the Hoover Dam, just a load of concrete and water really. Anyway driving for ages so we stopped at a diner in Kingman for a nosebag. The waitress told us we had passed the GC, so went back the other way, got to the entrance and a Ranger drove towards us, asked what we were doing, when we said we're going to the visitor site he said "sorry fellas, it's shut" we said it's only just gone 3pm it's open until 4pm, he clocked it straight away, "you're on Nevada time, this is Arizona, one hour in front, it's shut". He said we could drive to the bottom of the Canyon and see it from there. Drove down a dusty old road, passed a couple shagging in a car and got to a shed with a bog, that was it, looked around for 5 minutes, mate had a shit, drove back. It was dark by this time, managed to find a fuel pump at the back of a shop that sold food, gasoline, guns and ammunition.Just getting to Vegas and mate turns left into oncoming traffic on a 5/6 lane highway, 3 passengers screaming like girls, just managed to turn the hummer round before we were crushed by wagons, great day!

Missed the flight home on the Monday due to the weather in Chicago where we were due to transfer flights, finally got home Thursday, Mrs H didn't believe me.

Isn't this the sequel to National Lampoon's Vacation?

Just setting.off but now going to the West Rim.
The coach rep asked me if I wanted to swap as they had over booked and go onto the West rim instead of the south at no extra cost ($40 difference) and I get back 4 hours earlier and we'd have an extra hour at the canyon.
I asked why it was $40 more for 4 hours less and he said it was the entrance fees to each park that was the difference. To be honest a 14 hour round trip didn't appeal greatly so made the swap.

Hope you enjoyed, I think that's the one we saw from the bottom of the Canyon.

On my way back. Loved it but was promised 4 hours and got 3.15 - and that included the lunch provided which knocked off another 20.....
Was raining in the morning (Manchester drizzle) and those on the bus who booked helicopter flights were crapping it but 20 mins after we got there the sun came out and I regretted leaving my hat on the bus.
Fantastic views. There were 3 stop off points via park transportation but losing that hour meant we couldn't get to the furthest point.

Did you go with Leah and Sergio? when they took us a few years ago we went via Williams (stayed their overnight) and went to the canyon from there (only a 15 mins drive).
