I guess I fall on the fact that “showing up” is the minimum, and the results of his work were less than they could, and probably should, have been.

Yes, the £100M has been an anchor that created expectations that have probably not been met, but even discounting the record setting price tag, I think it would take a brave man to suggest that the City version of Jack Grealish has been anything but a shadow of the Villa version.

Yes, he will retire with a ridiculous medal haul for being at City for the last few years, and has done things most players dream of. But, none of that suggests he has been anything close to being “at the heart” of the City Treble winning team, or any other City team for that matter.

I’m certain he’s a great bloke, but then so is the guy who fixes my car. Jack has not, and appears will never, lived up to his price tag or public profile, which is sad, because it feels like he could have been another Rodney Marsh (on his good days).

So Pep kept picking him just because he turned up? This is why the argument that Jack wasn't that good falls apart from the off.

Add to that Doku seems very committed to his profession and is only just 23 id have hazard a guess that in a year or 2 a 25 year old Doku is much better for us than a 31 year old Jack. If Doku doesn’t improve by then he’ll be gone too but Jack isn’t going to improve from now as he ages.

All about opinions Doku doesn’t inspire me with any confidence, I haven’t seen a lot of improvement since he’s been with us but I accept he’s young etc. Grealish never let us down in the pitch and in big games especially I felt he could be trusted. Pep used to trust him but clearly doesn’t now.

I have given empirical reasons why I believe he was; you have provided nothing to reciprocate that and I therefore have to assume that you feel the same way about Stones, Walker, Ake and Dias.

Like I indicated previously, we obviously have different interpretations as to what being at the heart of things means and your bar is plainly higher.

You are correct, of course, which must be why our record transfer (by a country mile!) was a bench warmer, who not only got dropped from the England squad, but couldn’t get on the field for club or country in recent months!

Performance careers revolve around “What have you done for me lately?” and it’s clear that while he may have had what might qualify as one good season here, Pep and City are actively seeking to ship out our record signing and one of our highest earners.

Not to worry, though, I’m sure his Gucci deal will keep the kid in nappies!

I was talking about the people claiming he wasn't great or an integral part of the treble not last season. Do keep up as it was you in convo regarding the treble ffs! :-)

Something since then has happened but I'm not so sure one should shout performances because most of the squad were gash last season and Jack looked okay when he played. He was also picked in some big games.

Anyhow one can try and deflect more but the simple fact is Pep thought he was doing very well in our most successful team and you can try and say he is the luke chadwick of our era but it falls down with more than 5 secs of thought.
You are basically saying you can judge a player better than Pep but don't have the bottle to come out with it.

Absolutely. Fit enough to go on the piss, attend football games and slap football players but unfit to work. He should have got community service the little scrote as aside from the banning order and fine, which his parents have paid, he's not suffered at all. It's mostly a verbal issue but I would be surprised if more than 6-7 players could be described as being at the heart of a football team. I'd say that being at the heart of the team is similar to being part of the spine of the team, i.e., players back then like Ederson, Rodri, KDB and Haaland. Gundogan was captain and great in the final months, so he must be there too. Strictly speaking, that's it.

Perhaps Bernardo too (midfield was exceptional). Stones was outstanding in the last 3-4 months of the Treble season, arguably more so than Grealish, which makes him a strong candidate for being part of that spine (in that short period).

Grealish was part of the first team, which was good enough. If we know that if we pay 120m for Palace's Eze we will win the Treble next season, we'll do it.
