People always mention Alan Turing but two in the computing field who rarely get the attention they deserve are Clifford Cocks and Malcolm Williamson.

Working together at GCHQ they developed the mechanisms to implement the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. This enabled the concept of Public Key Encryption to be introduced allowing secure transmission of electronic messages and digital signatures.

Sadly, because their work was secret, American scientists Rivest, Shamir & Adleman were the first to publicly market the now industry-standard RSA encryption method.
