Greatest Guitarist

Such a general question - greatest in what sense?

In terms of "shredding" and overall technique then Vai or Malmsteen for me.

Now your talking.....
and Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, John Petrucci.

Unfortunately people will always vote for Clapton, Hendrix, Bolan (lol) even Hank Marvin. But they are still great in their own right.....

Unreal, the first name that came to mind when I read this thread.
I also had the pleasure of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan whilst leaning up against the stage at massey hall, and a 15 year old Derrick Trucks at the Gasworks. Lets throw out Pat Metheney while we're at it. There's way too many different types of players out there to pick a fav.. I personally allways liked George Thorogoods style.

Pure class. Going to see him at the Bridgewater Hall in October.

Personal faves include Hendrix and Page. Glad to see a mention for Stevie Ray - his brother Jimmy Vaughan is pretty good too, very different style to SRV, laid back almost understated, saw him supporting Buddy Guy up in Newcastle a few years back. Got to add Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi.

Prince whilst not the best always seems to go unnoticed.

Nuno Bettencourt ain't bad either.

Couldn't agree more, Prince was absolutely fantastic and never gets credit. There isn't a single style or technique that he didn't seem to master and the notes actually made sense and told a story.

Obligatory clip:
