Haaland the superstar

Another with a short memory of sergio , unbelievaboo

I'm obviously talking about profile. You're absolutely naive if you think Aguero's profile was anywhere near the size of Haaland's. It wasn't even close. Haaland transcends City. Aguero didn't. That doesn't make Sergio any less brilliant of course, but it's just how it is. Haaland is the kind of player kids follow from club to club. Aguero never was.

My 14 year Ukrainian friend entered the UK in April last year with a typical modern day kid’s knowledge of the game. He “supported” Real Madrid and talked about Messi and Ronaldo, the usual stuff they pick up from FIFA and the playground or whatever. He knew who City were and KDB was and had some familiarity with the likes of Foden and Mahrez. He had heard of Aguero too I think.

But when I told him Haaland was coming to City his eyes came out on stalks.” Haaland? No way!” Etc. Now his prize possession is a (snide) Haaland shirt. He’s crazy about him.

That’s what Haaland brings. Not only goals but there’s a marketability about him that it’s hard to define. He’s not particularly handsome but he looks like an icon, a warrior, a Viking and he’s likeable and humble too. If he keeps scoring and maybe wins us the champions league he will be the biggest name footballer in the world soon. He’s already one of the top half dozen.

They’ve got their own house but are still part of the family. He still comes to the City games and come around her to watch on the telly. My wife took them for a haircut this afternoon and tomorrow morning im picking him up to play football. I sometimes get City tickets donated by posters on here and he’s always grateful. Fishing no. Not any more because he does my head in. Gets bored after 5 minutes. He hooked a carp once and lost it at the net and it took him about an hour to recover. He’s a very emotional boy!

I didn’t think these fans of specific players existed outside of Twitter, until my daughter told me that there was a bunch of Ronaldo fans in her pub before one of his early United games, second time round. She said it was bizarre. Singing all these Ronaldo songs. Some dressed in United tat but clearly had no interest in them bar one of their players. She said even her United regulars were calling them weirdos. Which takes some doing.

Not sure if Mbappe has much of that but assuming not, I’m guessing Haaland is probably only really the third player to have ever achieved that sort of status. And he’s still only a baby.

He is pure box office. The hysterical reaction to Haaland from kids in the crowd in my block for the Leipzig and Burnley games is something I have never seen at City. They were in awe of him. His sheer size and appearance resembles a super hero from a computer game. There is something special about Haaland as an icon...and it's not just about scoring goals. Even his interviews are box office. And this is just the start.
