Rascal, have you spoke to the CAB or someone like that? I've no idea what the situation is with regard to your rights and your DLA, but they could clarify things for you. My mum works for Manchester Advice* (part of Manchester City Council social work) based at Christie Hospital, as part of a team that advises patients about things like DLA as many of them are newly disabled as a result of their illness. Perhaps they might have summat similar at Hope?
*Incidentally as an example of the effect of post-2010 cuts, the whole of Manchester Advice was closed down due to a lack of funds. My mum's team only survived because the Christie agreed to keep them on as part of the hospital and pay them through the NHS.
I assume you are able bodied and pay for yourself day to day with a wage? So if you went to hospital for a long period would you expect to be charged for your meals? Because that's the same logic that you're applying here. Your wage is the money you live off - the DLA is the money the OP lives off.

blueonblue said:Lets just step back and look at whats being asked for, the benefits paid to you include an amount to feed yourself (Yes, I know its shit), because you have been in hospital more than 50 days you have not had to spend money on food, heating, lighting, and the other things that add up when your at home, and are expected to make a contribution for your keep.
I say contribution because while it may be true the cost per day for meals may well be only 1.17, the true cost if you include the staff, heating, right down to the plate, knife, and fork have to be paid for you can bet its a lot more.
Had they said to you we will deduct 2 quid a day while you are in I doubt you would have seen this as so unfair, its because they demand it as a lump sum it looks so unreasonable, so contact them and explain that due to your limited income you will struggle to pay it back and ask what they suggest.
There are a lot of things in the benefit system that are grossly unfair but this aint one of them,
