Hamsik or Gourcuff??

Neither as I've actually watched them both play a lot, not just on highlight shows or Football Manager.

Ancelotti didn't play him because his head wasn't right and he was inconsistent (and injured a lot)

Ancelotti of course is a big mate of Mancini's & anyway Mancini will have seen at close hand when Gourcuff was struggling at AC, so that may explain the lack of interest in him.

Hamsik for me, he will be hungry for it but Gourcuff maybe another player who's heart isn't in it as he is from AC and won't have the same drive as a player who came from a smaller club looking to win things.

Any of you guys seen Javi Martinez? Seems like a very good player at Athletico Bilbao. Very tall and great in the air. likes to run with the ball too.

I must admit that I don't actually watch lots of Spain. I watch the Italian, French, Portuguese leagues whereas a mate of mine is more interested in Spain, Germany and Scotland. We tend to both catch the odd South America or MLS game, we're both freelancers and football mad so it's cool to compare notes on teams or players, shame he's a rag really.

Anyway, he says that he is quality and is expecting big things from him in the future. Can't see him in England though, seems like one of those players who is made for Spain but can't see him staying at Bilbao this summer.

I tend to agree with Damocles on the relative merits of Gourcuff. I've seen a lot of him here in France, and even here he tends to drift in and out of matches. Undoubtedly he's technically very gifted, but the for the price which Lyon would demand, it would be a non-starter for me.

I like what I've seen of Hamsik (not a lot). I have a friend who's an Italian football journo who reckons that he would be a big hit in the premiership. He says he's the nearest thing to Frank Lampard in world football...

Can't see Lyon demanding all that much for Gourcuff. In fact, i don't think we'd have to pay them anything at all for his services to be honest.

LOL. Mea culpa! I meant Bordeaux...honest guv...;- )

The point applies though. They paid 18 million euros for him (I think!), so certainly will want a big return on that investment!

Hamsik has question marks over his strength and his reliance on time on the ball. There's been a few times where I've watched him and was thinking "just release the damn ball quicker". Don't get me wrong, he's a good player and if I was forced to, I'd probably choose him over Gourcoff, but he is still behind players like Milner for me, or even Modric. He won't fit in England, he'll be the next Veron.

Do you really think he'd be 'The Next Veron'? I must say, I have to agree that he's a bit over-hyped ('closest thing to Lampard', etc), but I've watched him a couple of times and liked him ok. I know what you mean about time on the ball, but he's not a total dawdler - he seems fairly full of energetic running, and times his runs into the box quite well.

Really, I think we're talking about a replacement/alternative for Ireland, a 'hole' player (we can expect the 4-4-2 to be abandoned next season), so I'm not sure that Hamsik has enough in the way of cute, unlocking passes. I wouldn't mind a Van der Vaart, a Modric, a harder-working Arshavin, a Nasri, an Ozil, a Diego, an Arteta or a young Clarence Seedorf though.

Gourcuff, we don't need. We'd have to play him as one of two strikers, I reckon.

Saw that Real Madrid are thinking of buying out Javi Martinez's contract at £26m.
