Happy 5-1 day

Problem was we dined out on it far too long as we had fuck all else to eat then. We won by one goal less last season and just casually moved on to the next game. It was still a great day though.

I was in the Kippax that day. But must give a special mention to the blues in the North Stand for their invaluable contribution to that win!

I was in the north stand on the other side of the chaos near the right corner flag. I had bought my ticket for a tenner from a utd fan. When it kicked off behind the goal I witnessed a woman get punched hard in the face(utd fan). Apart from the typical utd thuggery it was like living a dream. I had a feeling we were going to see something special. Ian bishop with that haircut became an icon. Hughes scissor kick made us shit the bed for a bit.I met up with my mate on the other side of the north stand. When their goal went in we got threatened by a pirate with a black mullet and a 80 year old mr Magoo lookalike. We were only young and didn’t know how to handle the shit off them so that pissed us. When that fifth and ‘best’ goal went in they fucked off. After the game I went and bought one of those city grabbing the Red Devil by the throat t shirts. Think it said ‘these colours never run’. Brilliant day soured by by couple of shitheads.

Wonderful as the day was i thought the last Maine Rd Derby even better. The 5 1 was against a United side which at that point had won nothing under Ferguson in spite of massive spending. The last Maine Rd Derby was against an all conquering United side who were humiliated on and off the pitch. Neville reduced to tears after a major cock up and had to live with Gary Neville is a blue chant. If not my favourite game ever certainly in my top three, even now any win against the rags fills me with joy and keeps me happy for months.

I'm not an old timer like you but I would love for Pep to stay long enough that we have 10 league titles (CL or no CL).. because that would mean we'd have dominated the league for an entire decade in our land.

The CL would be cherry on top but I love the cake.

The fact you called me an old timer at 48 and I can probably run 100 metres quicker than most twentysomethings...

Fair point, both games were great in their own ways, and being totally honest we probably thought we'd lose both!
Both were after long periods without a derby victory ,the last Maine Road one longer(although we'd obviously not played them every season in both cases).
The 5:1 was special because half our team had come through the youth system and United really had started to 'splash the cash' big time.
Looking back, I don't think they were a million miles ahead of us either in the last years of the old first division.
We should have definitely won the next 2 Maine Road derbies (well on top in both and cocked up a 3:1 lead then missed a last minute sitter) and we finished above them the following season. It was only really when the Premier League started that we really started going in different directions.
As you say in the last Maine Road Derby they were a much better side than in 89. so it was probably a more 'impressive(?)' victory for us. Winning the last Derby at Maine Road felt really important (as indeed was winning the first one at COMS the following season). It also felt at times previoys to this we'd never beat the rags again.
As you also say, all victories against the Rags are great, and even though we are, and have been better than them for sometime, I still certainly don't take them for granted!

Well you are an old timer in terms of following City. ;) I'm much newer with only 11 years under my belt!

And its funny you mentioned the running bit.. After I got COVID this year.. I'm frecking exhausted. Dropped my wife's groceries the other day because the bags were too heavy.

I used to take pride at 44 I could still run 3 miles, but now, even 3 months later, I can barely run 300 meters without getting winded.

Sorry to hear that mate, I also got Covid pretty badly, give yourself time to recover properly.

Three months is still short. I was in bed for six weeks and took me six months to feel right again.

Even scarier is my lad turned 15 a fortnight ago!!

So to recap, he has seen six Prem titles, six League Cups and two FA Cups.

In the same period, beating United 5-1 was about as good as it got until the Stoke Final in 2011.

I think it's fair to say the likes of our generation were more than owed this last decade!

Similar scary symmetry. I’d just turned 18 and that warm September day will be for ever etched in my mind. I’d not actually witnessed a Derby victory live and it’s been a long wait for this feeling to be repeated. But what a night that was in town also, bumping into blues everywhere, ended up in The Venue just drinking in all that had happened with a big smile on my face.

My eldest lad has just turned 18 for him beating rags is the norm, I keep him grounded though.
