Immediately transported back to my schooldays at junior school in the early 60's. I think you could buy them from the h'apeney tray, when money was proper money, pounds shillings and pence, before this decimalization shit in the 70's.

I can remember when Joe Corrigan was breaking into the team, that Harry Dowd looked the better keeper. However Joe seemed to keep more clean sheets because he could deal with crosses.

The only problem with Harry was he lacked height.

Alan Ogley had the match of his life away at Southampton when City lost 1-0. He made a string of miraculous saves. The home supporters were so impressed that they put a picture of him up in their club at the Dell.
when joe made the breakthrough to the first team he was dogshit. absolute shite. he was taken out and then came again. this time though he was a world beater :)

Spot on De Niro,Big Joe gots dogs abuse when he broke into the first team.

IMO deserved, think he was carrying too much weight but he went away and got properly fit and changed a lot of minds on his return.Loved Big Joe always seemed to me like one of the lads and best goalie I have seen play for City.A bit too young to remember and appreciate Bert although I think Joe Hart will one day be the best ever I saw

I worked at the CIS on Miller Street during the late 60's and a guy I worked with was 'in the know' with some of the City players. He'd heard that the reason why Ken Mulhearn was dropped after the Fenerbahce away leg was because of his behaviour on the flight home. He allegedly had too much to drink and was laughing and joking, which didn't go down well at all with Joe Mercer and Big Mal. He was dropped for the following game and Harry Dowd kept his place for the remainder of the season.

In my opinion Harry was the better of the two, albeit that he was a bit weak on cross balls but as a shot stopper he was very good indeed.

My memory is that Mulhearn came to City as a swap for Alan Ogley plus cash.

I'm not quite old enough to remember either Harry or Ken. My City memories date only from 1975/6.

However, I do recall that Malcolm Allison used to tell the story of City going in for Gordon Banks when Leicester put him up for sale in 1967, having decided to put their promising youth teamer Peter Shilton in the senior side to enable them to cash in on the England 'keeper. Allison said that he and Joe Mercer decided to make a bid for Banks, but Mal was frustrated by Mercer trying to haggle the asking price down.

He claimed that Joe offered GBP 40K, and we ended up losing out on the player, who went to Stoke for just over GBP 50K, then a British record for a goalkeeper. Instead, we ended up getting Mulhearn. IIRC, we paid around GBP 30K for him (including Ogley's value when he went to County in the swap deal), and Ken only played around 50 league games for us before moving on. He saw out the rest of his career at Shrewsbury and Crewe.

It always struck me as a great shame that we lost out on Banks. I know that the extra GBP 20K or so we'd have had to pay to land Banks rather than Mulhearn wasn't an insignificant sum in the footballing climate of that time. Surely, though, it would have been worth finding the money from somewhere for the guy who was then arguably the best keeper in the world?

Anyway, not much we can do about it now. One of those 'what ifs', though.

Sorry to hear that Harry Dowd is not enjoying the best of health, Another case of fond memories resulting in a tear or two. Saw Yashin play at the swamp in 66 world cup. The song was right " Harry is better than Yashin" Thanks Harry and all the best.

Big Joe was indeed less than perfect in his early days as he certainly tipped the scales. I believe he was playing at the swamp in the early 70's, and he heard someone yell 'Corrigan, you useless fat twat', or words along those lines. When he looked around, he saw the barrage of abuse had come from a City fan.

He was genuinely hurt by it, and worked all through the close season to shed the excess weight.

He came back thinner and meaner and never looked back.
