still think we will bid again........
Not a chance, I posted in the first few pages of the thread that he’s a tugboat and not worth the figures quoted in the press and that’s clearly very much the case. There’s more chance of us signing Pele in exchange for Buzzer.

I don't really see why City fans are lining up to criticise Maguire. In my opinion he's a very good central defender and a player who would fit our ideal of a footballing defender very well indeed.

At least we should now find out if City's interest in the player is real.

Because some people disagree with you ;-)

I don't think you should nor can you buy young players exclusively (for arguments sake, players under 25). On occasion you do need to supplement the squad with some experienced heads, who are still performing at an elite level.

In this particular case, I think a player of the stature and character of Vinnie leaving does leave the risk of a leadership vacuum, both on and off the field. I would be against spruiking huge money for a player 28 and above, but in the case of Alderweireld for example (I don't want Bonucci for tbf for various reasons), it would make so much sense. We'd also then be able to bring along a young talent like Garcia according to plan, so that he's ready to go when Otamendi leaves.
To be honest, we've got plenty of experience and leaders throughout the squad, in fact most have had 2 years playing in a PL winning team. Just because someone is, say, 25, doesn't mean they are inexperienced - most of them are full internationals and used to playing at elite levels.

As regards Alderwiereld, I'm not so sure. To me, he always has a mistake or two in him, and I've seen that on several occasions against us. He also plays in a more defensive-minded team than City, and I think he would be exposed more often. He's not at the Mangala level, but there are definite signs.

That Newcastle lad lascelles could be an option but we need someone who could pretty much go into the starting lineup if needed this lad would need a bit more coaching but plenty of potential ..

I’d take him for £25m. Any more and I’d be saying “enjoy” to any club offering in the region of £70m.

I am surprised that Maguire doesn't agitate a bit more for a move after all he could end up playing with Smalling !

There in lies the conundrum pay over the odds for a proven CB, or pay over the odds for at best potential. I have no strong feelings about Ake either way but there is nothing that I can recall about his game that has ever made me sit up and consider him a future City player.
This would be the same Ake that has played in Bournemouth defence that has taken some almighty shallackings from teams including City over the last few tears.
The irony is that I actually agree with the naysayers who feel Mags is priced to high. However, increasingly the alternative options outside of Maguire are decreasing or don't appear to be favourable. If the season was to start tommorow I'd feel a lot more comfortable about City taking a hit on the price for Maguire than starting the season with Ake as one of are CB's.
Bottom line is Ake or not it does not seem that City can afford to go into next season with what we've got at the back. As preseason approaches though it's looking more and more likely that this may be the option given the dearth of available options out there, Alderweirld aside.

Think our board have walked away. Leicester seem firm on their ludicrous valuation.

To be fair it's only ludicrous if they are left with a player they want to sell. If they can get 80-90 mill good luck to them if they can't and he stays I expect they will be happy with that too.
