Why do we even want him.. surely there are better, more skilled, and cheaper options. Do we really want an average English player here for 80+mill?

Does he even fit the way City plays? I'd say city dodges one, if he goes to United for £80m+.

The way he tore down the left against us suggests he’s not that shabby on the ball. He’s always looked pretty comfortable in England games as well. He’s certainly a huge upgrade on Smalling and Stan Laurel.

The prices being thrown around are insane but that’s how the game is. The 75mill paid for VVD is already looking like a bargain and we can be sure that in a couple of years the bidding for the next big thing in CB’s will start way higher than 90mill.

It’s all bloody insane. We have to start spotting the VVD’S of this world a club before we do atm and snapping them up while they are still cheap. Both VVD and The Leicester Quasimodo were nailed on to be top players before they got to Southampton and Leicester. Instead we spent a year scouting Mangala and still bought him. At a ridiculous fee.

I’m sure that Pep will get the player he needs. Whoever that is will cost a ridiculous fee. 90 for The LQM or 40 for the Bournemouth kid, both will look cheap a couple of seasons down the road.

Football finances are beyond insane. Except when we sell of course.

This one is not done yet.

With the news Otermendi wants to leave, I think we will be negotiating hard with Leicester.

I wonder if Leicester have fully paid the Kelechi Iheanacho fee?
how about City don't want him, you clingers on why don't you think about this scenario.

Waiving money owed to us doesn't change what he will cost us though. Can't see that making any difference at all. I think he'd be a pretty solid signing for us. The fee sounds like it's higher than we'll pay but I guess players good enough for this side won't come cheap.

Is there really an alternative that is “Not Foreign”, has the right personality and can play the Pep way? (Ake?)

If not we have 2 other quandaries...
1. Is there any other “not foreign” player out there that could replace one of our squad players? (Rice for Gundogan?)
2. Is there a foreign CB with the right price, personality and skills? (???)

I can’t think of many answers to those questions right now (bad timing).

Anything other than just paying the money for Maguire leads to very complicated scenarios. Close our eyes, cover our ears, suffer the ridicule and maintain low expectations- maybe there’s a chance that he’d surprise us and be worth it???

80-90m is crazy for maguire. I hope we look to fill the homegrown quota with a young rb next summer, because I think there'd be a lot better value there. Stick with what we have this season.

We can't stick with what we have if Otamendi leaves as well, losing Kompany and Otamendi at the same time and being left with just Stones, LaPorte a make shift Fernandinho if we need it and an inexperienced Garcia isn't going to cut it. Sandler has gone out on loan, Mangala is to be sold he isn't even on the pre season tour, Adarabioyo will probably go back out on loan as well. We will almost certainly have to splash the cash on Maguire in my opinion as much as many of us think its too steep. Think about it who else is available?

Because we don’t know that. They don’t want him at 80 mill plus maybe but we didn’t want VVD at his price at the time and now it’s a bargain in the insane market.

If the club doesn’t want to pay that price it’s fine by me but we’re fans on a forum. Arguing is in our blood. :)

We got a bargain with Laporte.

Not at £80 million plus, no way.
I guess the point is that if we hadn’t said “75 mill for VVD, no way” we wouldn’t be facing an 80-90 mill fee for a lesser player or even an absurd 30-40 mill for Ake now.

Hopefully OTTY stays and we can keep our hands in our pockets. But next year the cost of players will have gone up another 10-20%.

It’s utter madness, especially to an old timer like me who’s eyes boggled at a quarter mill for Martin Peters.

In a masochistic I would like to see we lose danilo and otemendi and buy no one else and we still win the league would be so so good.

Absolutely. But we didn’t have to pay the HG premium tax on him.

My ideal CB signing? Whatever some relative unknown a team like like Southampton will sign for 20 mill and sell on for 100 mill in two years time. ;)

No. We would be facing a 100 million one for the next player instead.
