I was reading Soriano's book again and he mentions 3 markets where there is high disposable incomes but the local competition isn't strong, America, Japan and China. The idea is to buy into a club so you maintain a permanent presence in a new market; this allows you exposure you wouldn't otherwise have. The local population then will have a reason to chose your team when they decide which European team to follow. Then you have a captive market to sell your products to. I'm not sure exactly how we will go about building a relationship with the local fan though.
This afternoon I was listening to a journalist from the UAE on talk sport who thinks Qatar will pull out of hosting the 2022 world cup. It turns out the USA finished 2nd in the bid process. How good would it be for us if the USA were to end up hosting it? It could only boost football further in the States, and therefore our New York City.
