Talking of abuse to presenters... Here's what Adam Hills had tweeted at him last night after their segment on Lineker/Small boats crisis:

Actually early 1930s Germany is a worthwhile analogy. Not what it descended into when it grew in confidence and became increasingly malign as it was further consumed by evil; but what it started as. Reducing personal liberties, suppressing freedom of speech and blaming particular groups for societies ills.

Don’t be so complacent that the current direction of travel cannot continue along a similar path. I’m sure plenty of Jewish people dismissed the early days of Nazi government as just a phase. Don’t be overwhelmed with the benefit of hindsight and assume that what the Nazi party became was inevitable. Maybe it could have been stopped embarking on its genocidal course if enough decent people had spoken out when they could.

So yes, it’s absolutely balanced to caution against history repeating itself. Not because we are at the concentration camp stage, but to try and ensure that we don’t end up there.

I don’t disagree in the main, GDM. On the contrary, you make very valid points.

As it happens, although I generally lean to the right, I believe the government has created a smokescreen to cover their piss poor management of immigration over a number of years. And the smoke is a little bit acrid.

However, it’s a two-way street. Inflammatory language, racism and intolerance are not the preserve of the right. There’s a shed load of flame fanning from the left too. You don’t need me to give examples - and to do so would only provoke attack - but a glance at almost every political thread on Bluemoon confirms the degree of bitterness and division that pervade today’s world.

If the BBC hadn’t reacted to Lineker’s latest utterances, they would have added fuel to the widespread “woke” claims. Having now acted, they stand accused of undue government influence and double standards. They cannot win.

Will anybody win? Is Lineker a worthy martyr? Has the situation promoted reasonable debate or brought a peaceful society any closer? Or has it just sent everyone rushing to their barricades?

Yeah really smart move - want to see replays and analysis of our goals today - the Beeb can't do that. What did Pep think about our performance - the Beeb won't be airing that - still all those pundits you dislike are gone so alls good. First off I must say great post, I enjoyed reading that.

I don't really dissagree with much of that. Except to say personally I still don't think it was the right analogy to make and that Lineaker did it deliberately to get the reaction that it has. He could have said the rhetoric is similar to that of many modern countries and he dissagreed with it.

Anyway , it looks like things are rapidly escalating and drawing in more people, and neither side will back down.

Obviously only Lineker himself and maybe his close circle will know whether his tweet was a calculated piece or a more spontaneous opinion. I suspect either way he chose that analogy because it's the one that people most readily understand. There are probably more technically accurate ones but not as immediately understandable by a broad swathe of people. If it was an explicit piece of activism it might have been a deliberate 'fight fire with fire' strategy the merits of which is whole other conversation.

As you say this has now gone way beyond the content of the original tweet and is now focused on the relationship between the public broadcaster and the government of the day and the relationship between the broadcaster and the people who work there.

I think this is a very healthy debate.

The form that debate is likely to take is another matter. Historically the use of propaganda, whilst very powerful, was only one of several forms of public discourse. However, the nature of the current generation of social media amplifies the role of propaganda (of any colour) to a point where it drowns out so much else. Imo the sooner we learn how to use the technology and sensibly hold it's owners to account, the better.
