It is an accepted fact in Germany that Bayern Munich tap a player up, get the player to run down his contract and then pick up the player for next to nothing
This is what's really pissing them off about Sane
 
Bell, Lee, Summerbee, Goater, Morrison, Hart, Zabba, Captain, Book, Silva, Auguero etc
 
With respect, I think some on here are going outside my terms of reference. For one thing, I wasn't talking about a player's sell-on price, and whether we'd make a profit on what we paid for him. Youth players too don't come under the heading of "signings". And big stars like Dave and Sergio, while good investments, weren't picked up for peanuts. Bell, as someone has said, wasn't cheap by the standards of the time for a Bury player. Even the great Vinny, who was incredible value, wasn't cheap as such. They don't have to be big stars now.

In answer to the question I posed, I am impressed by the suggestions of Joe Hart and Tony Book. Horlock and McNab were good too, and probably Buzzer, but we were in trouble then and it was a lot for us in our situation of the time.

Thank you for your suggestions nevertheless. I agree, we have made some shrewd purchases - it wasn't all the Wilfried Bonys of this world, thank goodness.
 
Colin Bell, yes he was £45,000 but I would argue that was a bargain, even though an average man's wages was around £15pw.

To be honest, United bought two very influential players (Schmeichel and Cantona) for peanuts. (I know they've overpaid for some rubbish as well)

So have we bought a great player, who has done yeoman service for us, for a bargain price? (Not just some cheapo at the end of his career). I wonder.
