Have many of our “fans” become entitled?

OP is correct of course and it is a shame.

There isn’t one overriding reason but certainly social media plays a big part.

I think people have always been this way it’s just now they have a bigger voice than before. The bottom line is people think they know best whatever the evidence to the contrary.

To a certain extent that’s what a forum is about, a lively debate and exchange of opinions designed to challenge our preconception. However the extreme and personal opinions are definitely worse and shocking and often it’s not the younger generation on BM either.

In particular the comments I read about Pep on BM after a defeat are astonishingly bad. There is a thread on here called does Pep get enough credit. I would say that he does in general but not on BM. If we read the comments elsewhere we would be up in arms but on here it seems OK for some reason.

If Blues can have a go at Pep they will never be happy unless the joy of watching City is waiting for a defeat to moan.

I think the best way of looking at it is to compare how we judge City to the way we judge our family, we love em but they sometimes drive us crazy and consequently, within the confines of the family, we can be super critical about them, often way over the top, because we have an emotional attachment to them.

But if they're criticised from without we defend them to the hilt.

We love City and to stretch the familial metaphor we look at the team a bit like an extended family, consequently the criticism in here can be a bit OTT and not just the screaming and shouting we find in the match day thread. We all felt bitterly disappointed that City got involved with the ESL bollocks, we thought the club was better than that.

You don't get too much unemotional detached analysis in here because we feel things about City on a visceral level, consequently restraint is sometimes thrown out the window in favour of the ridiculous, but only because we give a shit and we will defend our club with all our might from outside criticism.

@SebastianBlue

Ric's right a version of this thread has appeared in nearly every season since the takeover. But I think that in and of itself is very instructive because our success has grown in the last decade, and it seems exponentially alongside it has grown a need to complain.

I see a lot of usernames in this thread for example, who are desperate to defend their right to an 'opinion' without really seeing the bigger picture. I see the same extreme argument with people talking about how we're no longer the club we were 20 years expectations have changed etc. as if that is somehow an excuse for talking about the club today in the same harsh tones that we talked about it twenty something years ago.

Absolutely we're better and our expectations are higher. But a very loud minority have taken that to an extreme. As you and other have pointed out, the player 'discussion' forum is probably the most instructive. It's a disgrace and it's populated by quite a few people whose opinions aren't worth the cost of the bandwidth and who just seem to take their "he's shite" dog and pony show from one thread to another depending on a player's form.

The key thing for me though is that they're a minority. They're just really fucking loud and post all day in all manner of threads thus giving the impression that the whole forum is full of entitled clowns. I've found being generous with the 'ignore' button helps clean the mess up.
I particularly enjoy those posters who say "I just say it how I see it"
Which they somehow believe makes it OK to slag off individual players on a personal level and not make them come across as massive fannies.

We should have increased expectations but we shouldn't be having tantrums when things don't go our way. Players will have bad games or hit a bad run of form. There will be injuries. The manager will make mistakes. We'll buy some players that don't work out. But the fact is we've got great owners, the greatest manager and the best squad in the league - the last part being true now for the majority of the past decade.

I will always give people the benefit of the doubt and when I go to games I'll never whinge if someone plays a poor pass or misses a chance. I'll continue to support them. Some of the stuff in the Sterling thread is hard to read because he's been an excellent and key player for us over the past few years and deserves more support from the fans. He might not be in great form and he certainly has flaws, but to read about selling him and getting someone better in is frustrating and the kind of entitlement that I'm not keen on.

People need to trust in the experts running the club. Mahrez, Gundogan, Rodri, Stones, Cancelo, Jesus, Sterling... all would have been long gone if posters on here had have been in charge.

It's a curious thing that they can feel comfortable coming on a forum and calling a player a coward, or worse, but then their own skin is so thin if anyone dares to pull them up they're immediately crying to the world about how they're being attacked and being censored. Big men don't just call it how they see it, they also don't cry if someone tells them they're chatting shit.

You’ve well and truly done me there, Ric — and I even searched “entitled” and “ragish” in thread titles before posting to see if there were any recent discussions about this! I should have run down the synonyms before clicking “post”. Another reason to strip me of my mod privileges!
Only messing mate. On a serious note, great to see you back posting. Will PM you later.

I like many on here celebrate an achievement by City with a bottle of bubbly. Traditionally this would be Champagne for reaching the 40 point mark and Prosecco or Cava for winning the title or a cup.

This year it was Prosecco for the 40 point mark and Champagne for winning the title. Am I on a slippery slope?

A slippery slope to becoming a woman? Keep up with the prosecco and you're pretty much there...
