Have you ever moved/lived abroad? What was your experiences, best advice?

Spent 6 years ( 2 x 3 year tours) in Cyprus when in the RAF.. my advice, soak up as much of the local culture as you can. Far too many people want the UK in a tin when overseas and whilst there is nothing wrong with some of what you’re used to, from my experience what you can find locally is often fantastic

New Zealand for a couple of years in the 90s, probably didn’t appreciate it enough while I was there although it was a great experience. If I had my way would be there now

Lived in Australia for 2 plus years after meeting a girl while on a workkng holiday visa and spent 6 mths or so on a Kibbutz in Israel.

Loved my time in Sydney (Manly on the Northern Beaches), outside living, being near the beach, living healthily but as time dragged on the things I loved about home I missed more and more. When I got back vowed to adopt the things I loved about life over there and bring them to my life over here. Now Im pretty happy with my lot and made the right decision

One thing I do notice about some people who move abroad they cite stuff like congestion, crime etc as reasons for moving, but the reality is moving around this country your lifestyle can vary wildly.

If I had one piece of advice to people moving abroad, would be to chuck yourself into everything, push yourself out of your comfort zone or you risk becoming isolated and not fully enjoying the experience.

Lived and worked in Bermuda for three years, loved it. Met loads of British ex-pats, we had a great social scene, played right back for the footy team, visited the States a couple of times, learnt to scuba dive, I'd definitely recommend it. Probably still be out there but met the ex-Mrs and we both decided to come back to Blighty as we wanted to buy a house and have kids - six months later we were split up. Even met Shaun Goater out there in a bar called Henry VIIIs, still got the autograph.

2 years living in Prague with work and 4 years in the states when I was younger. Both absolutely brilliant experiences but I was there for a purpose and always knew I’d be coming back. Neither were never really home.

Left the UK in 2001 to study in Spain and Germany. Ended up spending the next 13 years in Germany before moving to Austria 7 years ago. Found a job I enjoyed and decided to get more qualifications, and I’ve not once regretted it. I love the European way of life and have no plans to ever move back to the UK. As long as I can still have my fix of City on TV and the occasional European away game, I’m happy. Good beer, beautiful women and a job I love.

Split with the Mrs at 34. Got a job In Zurich, stayed 2 years, then moved to Dublin for a year and loved it, then moved to Brussels for 7 years and loved it. Met a new bird from london and moved to London for 1 year, and hated it. So got a job in Zurich again and the GF followed me here. Still here after 8 years and will probably never leave. Still think the split with my Mrs at 34 was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Been in Ireland for near enough 4 years now. Quite happy with my lot and don't think I'll permanently move back again unless there's a total disaster. But who knows? If you would have asked me 5 years ago if I would be living here, I would have said no.

Best tips? Stay away from 99% of other English people abroad. The friendship never seems to work out.

Me and the misses lived in Albuferia Portugal for a couple of years, up until she decided to get up the swanner. Best time of my life I look back at pictures we both looked so healthy and happy, also I’ve never had so much money. I had a bit of gambling problem at the time, we went for a one week holiday noticed it was illegal over there except casinos of which I hadn’t seen a single one, thought I want a bit of that and jumped on a flight 2 weeks later with a bag on my own, my misses came a couple of week later. It’s a small town, in my time there I became a bit of local hit they loved me whenever we go back I get great reception..... feel like a celebrity.
