Heartburn

I get two types of heartburn. What I imagine is the regular one that keeps me up, where my gut churns and the over a stretch of time acid 'gently' makes its way up and down my oesophagus, roughly as far up as where the heart is. It is annoying, it is a pain in the arse, all that. It takes a while but eventually some rennie or gaviscon seems to sort it.

But it is nothing compared to the second kind that occasionally hits me. I'd be comfortably fast asleep, and out of nowhere without warning or any build-up, acid would instantly and violently shoot all the way through to my mouth, and wake me up as I desperately try contain it splurting out, and trying to on the spotjust awoken decide whether to swallow it back down (usually happens by instinct) or if I have enough time to run spit it out. And then either way, it's gone back and that's that. No point taking anything as it doesn't come back. That one is just fucking horrible. Had it last night, and my whole throat, vocal chords and insides of my cheeks still feel burnt and raw this morning no matter how much I girgle wash.

Anyone got any tips on that one? No need to say go see a doctor btw, I'm on a waiting list for an endoscopy.
Try and get omeprazole or lansoprazole. Also, do you eat your tea late in the evening, or lie down within 2 hours of eating?

I don't usually eat late. Tried intermittent fasting and avoiding various types of food as a way to reduce either type of burn, haven't yet noticed a pattern. If anything I think I don't seem to get heartburn when I have eaten late, and almost expected it, whether that's the odd snack or being out etc. But don't do that often to really claim it.

I had the second one you have described for a short period of time and it was awful, so I really feel for anyone with those symptoms longer term. I worked out I was getting it due to a strong antibiotic I was on and I hadn’t drunk enough water either side of taking the tablet particularly the last tablet before going to bed. I basically drunk loads of water throughout the day and particularly before taking the tablets and it stopped it fortunately.

I know mine was due to medication I was on at the time but perhaps drinking a lot more water throughout the day may help your symptoms a bit.

Nothing sinister found thankfully but being put on lansoprazole as have hiatus hernia and some inflammation down there
Didn’t want to preempt your diagnosis but I’d assumed that was your problem. Had the same for over 15 years got checked after dad passed with osophogus cancer. Get checked every 2 years and if it helps I cut down on boozing already stopped smoking have no caffeine whatsoever avoid all soda drinks apart from lapses avoided chocolate too and all processed foods all this is good stuff anyway but it definitely helps I even stop taking the lansoprazole for a few days each week. I also have the bed slightly elevated which helps. Another major thing to avoid is Tomato and Citrus. All this is well documented guidance but it really helped me. I also in the last few years started taking Fermented Turmeric and also Aloe Vera in liquid form every morning. The only real challenge for me was boozing, I’m always habitually pissed before watching city previously through necessity and can’t seem to be able to just go to a game without a booze. This is the only lapse and it doesn’t help as I now know because during lockdown I didn’t drink and never had any reflux

Don’t eat a big late meal and if you must, make it as light as possible. Don’t drink late at night and if you must, make it water and just sip enough to wet your whistle. Take a generic “acid controller.” Try to prop yourself up in bed, if you can, to help you drop off.

This sounds very similar to my symptoms in recent years.
I ended up on Lansoprazole as part of my medication post having a stent fitted 8 years ago. My weekend diet at the time consisted of beer and crap food which with hindsight didn’t help. I’ve cut out the beer and eat pretty healthy now and in the main I get no issues.
The real bad burning I have had very occasionally and I can usually pin it on to a late extra spicy curry or similar, so I either eat earlier or tone down the heat.
As a few have said, medication might help you out a lot and hopefully stop you worrying about it which doesn’t help.
@dronefromsector7G - hope the results are all positive for you mate
Edit: Happy days, seems like they were - I’ll leave the nice thoughts anyway :)

I've been through something very similar to yourself. Unfortunately for me this was 20 years ago, when treatment was pretty basic and because of the reflux I ended up with Barrets Oesophagus and then cancer.

I found drinking cold milk will soothe your throat and also I'm on Esoperole which prevents the production of peptic acid which should stop the reflux. Sleeping sat up in bed or with your head higher than your feet should help as well. I still to this day sleep sat up in bed.

When I went for my first endoscopy to treat my Oesophagus cancer, they also found I had "Hecto Pylori" and "interstitial cystitis" which pretty much describe the symptoms you are suffering from.

Both were easily treated with antibiotics, and they have a simple salivia test for the "HP" and I think they found the cystitis when they examined samples taken from the endoscopy.

Hope everything goes well for you.

Thanks. I eat pretty healthy overall by default and generally usually most of my adult life. I eat crap from time to time, but not as a pattern. I drink, but nowhere near 'excessively' I would say. I Have gained weight, that needs dealt with. Other than that, there is not much 'lifestyle' that I could immediately pin it on. Had a saliva test for Helicobacter (not sure how related to HP you mention) and a couple other nasic tests. I do occasionally have daytime issues as well, hence the endoscopy wait. Till then I guess just really little things that can be done to manage it, that folk are suggesting, all welcome.
