High line and pressing

Well, I'm another who doesn't like a high line defence. I remember watching Chelsea v Liverpool when AVB was manager and Chelsea were dismantled. AVB got sacked, Chelsea reverted to a standard defence and won the Champions League with a stand in manager. All you need is runners from midfield timing it right and they are through. We simply do not have the personnel for this system. Yaya, Nasri and Silva are great with the ball but crap at getting it back. It's putting square pegs into round holes and will not work. Our strength has been based on solid defence and unless we change personnel wholesale I suggest we stick with what we are good at and improve on those things we not.

How did chelsea do in the league under de matteo? defending for your lives and relying on stealing games with a bit of luck isn't the best way to go, chelsea winning the champions league is irrelevant for this debate, pressing is the way the game is going you can't dismiss something on the basis of a few friendlies, time is the key, the manager isn't an idiot

As pointed out, Arsenal and United play the high line. Their defence has not been as good as ours in recent years. Not terrible, but not as good.

Frankly, it's complete bollocks. The one thing that has worked with our team is the defence. Doesn't need fixing. Ain't broken. Leave it alone. Best defence in the PL for the last two seasons. Don't fix what ain't broken. Concentrate on what we don't do well. Breaking teams down. We've signed the players to do that. Why mess with the best defence in England? This will cost us, until we realise there is no need to mess with it. Just concentrate on the areas we weren't so good in. Teams worse than Arsenal will catch us out if we play this unnecessary tactic.

utter drivel i'm afraid
This''
Look at the bigger picture we are changing the philosophy of our club 4-3-3 by playing a high line you apply pressure on the opposition i.e when you sit deep you invite pressure.we will stamp our style on teams just like barca but it will take a few months to fine tune.Thats why we are getting high scoring games.

We better make you manager if you know better.but im sure pellegrini knows what will work and if we have the right personal to execute his ideas if not he will bring in players who can play a high line.

This is a forum and what makes it interesting is the differing opinions whether you agree with them or not. It would be a very boring forum if all we said was "Pellegrini knows best" don't you think. So just present a counter argument rather than some sarcastic comment. Also we have just sacked a manager who finished 2nd and 1st in the last two seasons so what makes you think that Pellegrini will be given time to bring in players who can play a high line? The die is now cast, our manager must win trophies or he is a goner. Not even the luxury of a 2 year plan! I think Pellegrini is too smart a man to stick to a system that is clearly not suited to our current players. Look at the mess we made of the switch to a 3 man defence last year and I don't believe we have signed any defenders to change that.

i was saying thats how he wants to play 4.3.3 with a high line to dominate possesion and if players cant get there head around it he will bring players in.

Mancini got sacked and we finished 2nd. How much time do you think Pellegrini will be given? What do you think his targets will be? And "winning the Champions League" is irrelevant? Really? I like the idea of 5-4 thrillers but the truth is it's only a thriller if we win 5-4, I've never been thrilled getting beat 5-4.

A little part of me dies every time I read "Mancini got sacked for finishing 2nd". To be so misinformed about the club you support doesn't seem right to me.

i understand what your saying but look how barca dominate play they press high keeping virtually all there players in the opposition half and the ball seems to be constantly at there feet also puyol and pique ant rapid just extremely well coached to the way barca play.

irrelevant in terms of how we play, chelsea got very very lucky in a cup competition like greece did a few years back,in the league they struggled, barcelona, bayern dortmund all play a high pressing game it is the way the game is going, it doesn't mean all games will end up 5-4, it doesn't mean you have to change personel, it doesn't have to take years to get it right

Mancini wasn't sacked because we finished second, we have had a couple if friendlies using different players and people are saying we cannot play a pressing game, i do wonder sometimes

wRe: High line and pressing

While I agree that bedding in a new system takes time, that back 4 that was ripped apart by arsenal plus yaya a nd hart have played many times together and suddenly look like they cannt defend a simple through ball or one over the top. That is,worryig and can only be down to tactical
es. Balance is key.I heavily criticised mancini at the start of his tenurefor being overly negative. If we start leaking goals pelligrini will be rightly criticised as well.
