High line and pressing

Billy you really need to lose you Mancini fixation. Earlier in the thread you described him condesceningly as the Italian. Your dislike of him is well documented it really does not need constant reminders as we have moved on. To lots of us he was a great, to you he wasnt. Im OK with that and ive moved on but you havent.

So you think Mancini would have got sacked for finishing 1st? I think more than a little part of you has died.

How did chelsea do in the league under de matteo? defending for your lives and relying on stealing games with a bit of luck isn't the best way to go, chelsea winning the champions league is irrelevant for this debate, pressing is the way the game is going you can't dismiss something on the basis of a few friendlies, time is the key, the manager isn't an idiot

Mancini got sacked and we finished 2nd. How much time do you think Pellegrini will be given? What do you think his targets will be? And "winning the Champions League" is irrelevant? Really? I like the idea of 5-4 thrillers but the truth is it's only a thriller if we win 5-4, I've never been thrilled getting beat 5-4.

i understand what your saying but look how barca dominate play they press high keeping virtually all there players in the opposition half and the ball seems to be constantly at there feet also puyol and pique ant rapid just extremely well coached to the way barca play.

Barcelona are a great side because they have 3 all time greats in their side. I honestly do not think it's anything to do with style just quality players. The side that humiliated United in the CL final at Wembley a few years ago was the best I've ever seen but I think it's fanciful to try and emulate it in the Premier League.

irrelevant in terms of how we play, chelsea got very very lucky in a cup competition like greece did a few years back,in the league they struggled, barcelona, bayern dortmund all play a high pressing game it is the way the game is going, it doesn't mean all games will end up 5-4, it doesn't mean you have to change personel, it doesn't have to take years to get it right

Mancini wasn't sacked because we finished second, we have had a couple if friendlies using different players and people are saying we cannot play a pressing game, i do wonder sometimes

Chelsea had to play Bayern Munich in Munich and that's lucky? But, back to City, surely we should play the system that best suits our current players and evolve to the managers preferred system in time. To play your preferred system regardless would be folly. I believe (hope) Pellegrini is a lot smarter than that otherwise he will be gone. The reality is that if he does not win a trophy then he is under threat. He does not have any time, he must succeed and if we get as lucky as Chelsea I'd take that!

True. If only some of Barcelona players loses only a few percentages of their level, the hole system with constant high pressure, fast ball retention and ball posession when in control, threatens to collapse. It's good to be open for influenses, but I think it would be foolish to think we could play exactly like Barcelona.
Even Barcelona might find it difficult in the future to copy the Barcelona of say 2010-2011.

To be able to play with a high line, you have to always keep possession of the ball, and if you lose it, everyone in the team has to fight like animals to win it back. Yesterday we lost the ball way to easily. Navas was brushed off the ball on numerous occasions and Negredos first touch was not 100% and this allowed Arsenal to win the ball back. Then came the real telling moments. When they looked up they had the whole of our pitch to run into, and their forwards easily had the legs on our defenders and midfielders. It was too easy to hit us on the counter and get a run on our goal, they could have had 5 or 6 if they had a proper striker. I really think that it's way too early to implement this style of play so early on. Pellers needs to learn more about the PL before he starts experimenting.

i'm very happy that pellegrini wants to always play in the oppositions half. we should be doing the bullying on the pitch, not vice versa .

parking the bus and hitting the opposition on the break is not only boring but it is cowardly.

I mentioned in another thread that you dont play your full pressing game in friendlies. It is a complete waste of energy at a time when the training is much more physically draining as the players prepare.

It will be now that training drops off to the usual (standard tapering programme), and the players go into the season feeling the benefits of the 6 weeks of hard work. So yes, the players will be feeling tired at the moment. Thats kind of the point.

That said, id be surprised if we start with Dzeko/Negredo much. The game we are trying to play isnt going to work with both of them and Yaya in a 2 man midfield. 433 makes miles more sense. You could put Silva in the middle with Fern and Yaya just to provide that extra body to close down angles and players - Silva is quality at that.

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that the rags play a high line, well they don't.

The rags style has been to defend deeper getting players behind the ball, then breaking into the spaces of the middle and attacking third, very similar to the way we have played over the last few seasons.

The annomoly is that the more possession you enjoy, the higher up the pitch you play your game, the less space there is to get behind and penetrate.

The rags set teams up,defending deeper and breaking on the counter a direct style of play but with QUALITY,that's there style and why slurgie plays with wingers to penetrate and get behind and crosses that they thrive on.

I would rather play a 4-2-3-1 this utilises our players better or a 4-1-4-1.

I don't buy into a high pressing game WITH THE PLAYERS WE HAVE .

Possession is about creating space, movement, running off the ball, technically gifted players who can turn and dribble, keep our style don't re-invent something, but finding the players that can play a certain way/style.

High line/pressing. 433 I have my doubts. What do I know?

New manager, new approach. We're conceding goals because the defence line's not used to the higher line and new form of positioning, especially the full backs.

Watching the pre-season, I noticed most of the goals seem to have come from the left flank.
