High Speed Rail Network

It wont be ready for 20 YEARS!!! 20 Years!!!! How in God's name can it take 20 years to build?????

I travel regularly to London and the time doesn't bother me at all, but the fact I'm lucky to get a seat unless I pre-book my train does. A solution available in 20 years time doesn't really work well for me

Also, if there is to be a link to Manchester will it have to circumvent Stockport?

The covenenant that granted the land, free of charge, for Stockport station and the viaduct to be built has a caveat stating that this was done on the basis that ALL services using the line have to stop at the station.

It's going via the Airport so I suspect it might go the Didsbury route?

So by the time they have built both phases of HS2 people will be teleporting and live on Mars

That's already happening according to the David Icke thread.

First there was the canals, and the landowners complained.
then there where the railways, landowners and canal owners complained.
then there was the motorways and Landowners, canal owners and railway owners complained.
And then we did nothing for 60 years apart from filling in potholes and replacing the rusty Victorian tracks.

The infrastructure of the UK is shite and everyone is happy to complain about it but not do anything about it. Sooner or later the country will start going backwards and every dopey **** and his mangy dog will whine about it.

I think it's essential for modernising the infrastructure of our Victorian rail network. Our country's compact size will only be a selling point for business if we are able to exploit it accordingly. You can now go from Guangzhou to Beijing in 8hours, so our current travel time from Manchester to London is a bit of a joke.

My only problem with it is the 2032 completion date! I know it's an awful lot of work but it still seems ridiculous that it can't be done in under a decade. I really don't understand the outcry from most of the public whenever a sensible infrastructure project like this is suggested - particuarly on here where it will benefit Mancunians a lot more than others!

Wouldn't the £32billion be better spent sorting out the current railway infrastructure rather than a new fast line for people who want to get to London?

20yrs is a joke for completion, when you consider the likes of China already have this.

in 2032 I'll be 47 years of age (wow) haha...

The likes of Germany and China will have flying robot controlled spaceships in 2032,whilst we think this shit will rescue our economy.

Joke!

...which won't be around until 2033, and the scheme not complete until 2043?

No doubt we'll also go for the "betamax" version

What do you mean by current railway infrastructure exactly? I don't think the transport links between small towns should be a priority as most urban economists seem to think their decline is inevitable anyway.

Government should be targeting the needs of big business first to drive growth. An hour off a journey might not seem like a lot but remember that's two hours out of the working day - it's an even bigger difference if you consider foreigners coming to London on a long-haul flight.

Still the 20year estimate is an absolute joke and HS2 is hardly going to feel cutting edge by then. Whether you like Cameron or not, he is absolutely right that we have a problem with redtape and nimbyism in this country.
