High Speed Rail Network

Instead if building these new railways, can't we just upgrade the current west/east coast main lines so they can take trains of 225mph? Wouldnt that make sense and be cheaper?
no it wouldn't - they've done that once on the wcml and it cost an 11 figure sum a few years back with years of disruption

A tunnel from the airport all the way to the Ardwick end of Longsight is a mind-boggling construction project. It means digging below some of the most densely populated areas in Britain. If this happens it is a monumental scheme which will create huge amounts of jobs. But also potentially the worst residential and traffic disruption ever seen in this country. Interesting to see if it ever actually happens. I have my doubts.

Just had a phone call from my ex-wife panicking because she's seen reports on the news that the Hs2 is likely to cut through a village where we own a house.
After listening to her moan about us potentially losing out on any resale value for 20 minutes I told her its 20 years down the line and to stop pecking my head.
I guess my only question for the wise old owls that inhabit the cellar would be is there some facility in place where the government would purchase your house if it's in an area where building work takes place, and if it is is it a nominal fee that we're talking about or would it be whatever the value of the property is at the time?
Personally it wouldn't bother me if they carpet bombed the whole area, but that's another story..

Set of now in yours you may make it for 2020

The NIMBYism this announcement has spawned cracks me up.
The news crews have been out in force interviewing blue-rinsed Tory voting old pisspots in Leamington Spa because the line might pass within two miles of their mock-Tudor monstrosities.
Nobody has come to Rusholme or Longsight asking the po' folk and the immigrants how they feel about one of Europe's biggest ever tunnels being dug directly beneath their homes.
