So ive got through the Aesop Rock album: think the beats are good but the lyrical content is just too much. I don’t mind that it doesn’t mean anything because a lot of rap doesn’t, or doesn’t mean anything important anyway, but the words don’t make sense. Theyre just metaphors put together in long sentences wrapped around good beats but you end up spacing out to what hes saying because its nothing. So one of the beats I quite like is called zero dark thirty and heres some of the lyrics:

Zero friends minotaur fugly stepchild devote lunch jumped over plunging netlines
Up beside tongue-tied hungry enzymes default in a mothmen munching textiles
Punisher
Out past go time back ten fried worms cheerier

Now maybe im thick, but that’s just words, anyone can do that.

I listened to the asap rocky album this morning, again the beats are good and it sounds like theyre having fun. i like the fuckin problems song but the album doesnt reach out to me. just working through the rest of the albums over the weekend :)

If you want to get into some underground stuff with some good lyrical content have a listen to People Under The Stairs or go back a decade and get the Binary Star album Masters Of The Universe.

Try El-P for lyrics, he's top of that game. Manages to rap about Philip K. Dick books. Homeboy sandman and anti-pop consortium impress me lyrically too.

New material from De La Soul. Full mixtape coming soon featuring J Dilla beats. Ooooooh yes.

Schoolboy Q's new album was good, bit of everything on it really and it's good to see someone from TDE make a big splash and not just Kendrick Lamar. Wasn't a 'massive' fan of Because The Internet, I like Gambino and it had some solid tracks, but it didn't flow for me and I know that's what he was looking for.

Kid Cudi also had a new album out, that I knew nothing about and safe to say it was dreadful. Gone right off the boil past 3 years.
