Hip Hop/Rap Appreciation thread

so new Slick Rick album is superbly done.

New raekwon album is fire.

Enjoyed Joyner Lucas's new album ADHD2.

I must be one of a few people who enjoyed Will Smiths new album (by buying it)

Anyone got any gigs coming up?

I've got Redman next week and Will Smith att the end of the month.

Few other hip hop shows in Sept/October

Okay, so I thought about posting this in the AI thread, but this rendition of Tupac's 'Changes' needs to go here, so that the lyrics, even though I/ we know them, could be reframed in the mind.

Makes me appreciate the social desperation in the lyrics, even more.

Agreed...

Also found these two channels a tad interesting in flippin' n shufflin' the script, as it were:

Yeah.

When you're a kid, you think 'this is the best lyricist out there' and believe it. But, now, as an adult to hear it presented differently, makes me think I didn't register that thought properly.

Rappers, like Tupac, truly were the greatest storytellers of our time.

Agreed!

Only person I liken to Pac in terms of story telling like that is Nas.

I know you have ties with them @Maintainin

But you listened to the new Mobb Deep album? Been superbly made.

Really looking forward to what they can do with Big Ls album end of the month
Luv the album, i mean i really n truly absolutely fuckin luv it!

It has everythang, could slot it within any 92-97 calendar year n its a perfect fit ...let alone 2025 n bangin the way it do.

Would've been nigh on impossible to pull off 'without' Ps inclusion, its like he took a break moment from Restin' In Beats to come back down n grace it for a quick minute to remind folk he was always bout makin' moves...

Whole thang is just so Mobb Deep! ...the beats, lyrics, the featured artist, 2025 release, overall production etc

--------------------------------------------------------
I have no doubt Big L will be done proud, too.

would love to know from what year range the vocals were done. Sounds so much like he was there doing it fresh.

Would of loved to have seen his daughter on a track or two. Maybe they'll do a solo album for anything remaining

Can never say never in regards future endeavours, especially when factoring in the amount of 'lost tapes' material sat on countless DAT tapes, scrap notes, Cam cords, closets n sneaker boxes...

Will all work out fine as long as its handled n managed correctly n with tact.

I had totally lost any interest in the Battle Rap scene when it became a tad too toxic, trashy, repetitively predictable n vulgar, anythang after 2006 or thereabouts just stopped appealing to me.
May of simply turned into an old skool **** just stuck in me ways.

Of late though, been a few battles (of sorts) that caught my attention with many not coming from the obvious places or the obvious faces.

'Compliment' Battle Rapping:

I've been approaching it by a battle by battle process as n when i come across em n not in any kinda chronological order or fashion as it were n without knowing any individuals personal rap sheet of past etc, i been finding this approach much more appealing.

I luv the fact that i don't know the ins n outs of the likes of King of the Dot, Don't flop, Battles at the Bunker, URL or any of the current promotions of the last 19 or so years or any politics n so-called nuances that may come with em, i'm totally outta the loop n luv that/this way, it's more refreshing to me this way recognising n appreciating an indiduals talent as i see it.

The whole wit, intellectual prowess, wordsmithing n delivery i find to be so refreshing, all of this without a beat in sight, just raw acapella, having also to remember written bars is no easy feat but also the ability to be innovative n respond straight off dome when needed n is necessary is no easy feat within the craft ...seen many freeze on the spot like Deer in headlights ('Danny Jaqq' vs Sean Kray)

I'm also liking what i see when it comes to pairing up/double teaming.
I like the fact that it feels like i'm starting off all over again n having fun genuinely being entertained.

Local, regional, state - state or coast - coast battling has always been one thang but country - country n going deep into unfamiliar comfort zones without entourage hanger-ons is where its at ...Immortal Technique being a fine example back in the day, dolo, rode by himself n never gave a fuck!

The old me would simply be all bias back n side with all Brooklyn battle rappers vs anyone else simply on the strength they're reppin' BK, or any 5 boroughs, period! ...all that shite goes straight out the window when it comes to the 'complimentary' side of the Battle rap scene n scoring it on individual merit, exactly how it should be.

Anyways, switching it up with a couple of battles i thoroughly enjoyed n found entertaining:

(Theo Marlow) Marlo vs Anderson Burrus

Anderson been totally destroying opponents for more than a hot minute, saw a niche in the game n applied some very clever business acumen to it ...until he came up against Marlo!
Marlo unpacked him with surgical like precision in my honest opinion, great match up.

Anderson Burrus vs Jerry Wess

Shuffle t & Marlo (Shufflo) vs Quest Mcody

Frankie Phraser vs Sean Kray (London)

Marlo & Shuffle T vs Dirtbag Dan & Caustic (in L.A)

I've seen the Big L album is a lot of re-released songs that have been cleaned up and had new takes on them, there's a few new unheard verses on it but a lot of it is recycled verses as a lot of his catalogue got pulled a while back. There's also meant to be a Nas and Big L song on it.

A lot of Prodigy’s verses on the album were from the time just before they signed with 50 Cent, during that period and just after. There's a video on Instagram of Alchemist in the studio with Mobb Deep back in the early 2000s and him saying he wanted to remake the beat and that song ended up being “Gunfire” on the album.

Pat Stay (RIP) & Rone vs Marlo & Shuffle T

Hollow Da Don vs Bigg K

Bobby Rex vs Sean Kray

Bigg K has been a beast for years now. I used to go to an awful lot of the Don’t Flop shows but I fell out of love with it all after the Shorty Horroh vs Charlie Clips battle, it's good to see there's been a resurgence in it all and it's not died off. Shuffle T and Marlo were a serious tag team, Tony D used to be a monster and Shotty was Shotty, good times

Only just this minute (well, actually just over half an hour ago now) taken the time to watch that Shotty vs Clipps, so many witty innuendos mentioned that i could easily relate to from both sides when factoring in that whole Manchester, Harlem n London connect, Clipps has a way of genuinely making any crowd pay attention to every bar til the penny drops, i like that, equally Shotty has the same effect on crowd, as i'm evidently seeing with his animated set-to (x2) vs Arsonal in London n Toronto, respectively.

That said tho, i defo prefer the 'compliment' scene style over the usual no holds barred stuff.
