can't remember the guy's name either but I do know a little bit about this, I've been to Wolfsburg, and sat in the boardroom were Porsche and Hitler held meetings. Very creepy feeling, but the place its-self is astounding in it's scale and attention to detail. It's like a large army base, provides absolutely everything the workers and family could need. The scale of the factory itself is staggering, and everything is spotless, modern, perfectly integrated. The town around the factory was renamed Wolfsburg by the British after the war. The British took over the ruined factory and built cars out of the spare parts already there, albeit a fairly small number compared to what was being turned out pre-war. They tried to sell it on after a few years but Ford and co weren't in a position to take on what was still a major rebuilding project, so it was handed over to the regional government and made into a trust.

Originally it was planned by the Nazis to build a car for all germans, named "Kraft durch Freude"-Wagen (power by joy-car) or KdF-Car. And they built a city for the workers in 1938 near that hugh factory named "Stadt des Kdf-Wagens -City of the KdF-Car". The factory than later was used to build army vehicles. After the war the British renamed the city into Wolfsburg and decided to turn the factory back into a car factory and produced that KdF-car, now named Volkswagen Beetle

they would have done better, if they had destroyed the whole city. Now all germans have to bear that boring Volkswagen Wolfsburg football club in the Bundesliga

He was one of the best generals in the modern age however what youve pointed out is one of his biggest mistakes another was switching the bombing targets from the RAF bases to the major cities if he would of continued to bomb the RAF bases our airforce would have been wiped out and he would have had no opposition other than from the USSR which at the time were still allies with Germany.

It's well documented that deaths under Stalin are over-exaggerated due to the predominance of capitalism. No death is good, but Stalin's labour camps led to the death of the old, as history is gradually revealing. It's still not good, but how many people on here want people put in labour camps for being chavs? I personally have no problem with making people work for their benefits, unless they actually need them - ie they are unable to work, in which case they should be looked after. If they can work, they shouldn't be looked after. There's a lot of chewing gum, graffiti, new train infrastructure, etc, that needs sorting out, and if it's unskilled labour, I don't see why it shouldn't come from the unskilled white cider drinking Jeremy Kyle massive before they get their cheque every fortnight.

wow. I knew he cultivated his image as a badass, but that's pretty serious.

It's true tho. Obviously not much in favour with Hindus! But many in the trans-oxanian states still adore him. He did leave a legacy behind, unlike Hitler he didn't take everyone under him into the depths of hell, the regions to the west really did flourish. I'm really only saying this because I have a romantic notion of Samarkand around that time from reading books. His nastiness was legendary in every way, he cultivated it whenever possible for the fear factor. Attrocities where the norm for your average Central Asian warlord of the time, but yes, his were incredible in their scale and inhumanity, and as ghoulish as he possibly could make them.

I'm sure i read somewhere or saw it in a doco (possibly Michael Palin) that's his tomb to this day is untouched, even the communist wouldn't touch it under the USSR. As he made a threat on his death bed touch my tomb and I'll come back and have you (or something like that). To be honest he's a bit like Vlad Tepes (Dracula) who himself is held in high regard in his home country of Romania but reviled most everywhere else.
