Just a heads up that after the Brexit agreement here is some good news about EHIC. Whilst it is going to be abolished if you have a current EHIC card it will be valid until it expires.
This holds true for all EHIC cards applied for on line before Dec 31st...

July 2025 so happy days, however on a personal level we feel it best not to leave home without full travel insurance, if only for the repatriation, baggage, cancellation and curtailment protection. Sometimes if you show your EHIC you can get treated without having to pay any insurance excess. Both over 60 and our recent quote with declared ailments was only £56 for the two of us for a fortnight, so pennies.

Agree that an EHIC supplements rather than replace full insurance for the reason you specified.
We get full world wide travel insurance and full EU and UK breakdown insurance for two over 65s for just over £100 a year through the bank.

Edit
Despite newspaper reports that I reported above you cannot in fact now get a new EHIC card. The govt website has changed.

Stayed in Puerto Plata, not encouraged to venture too far from the complex but it was that big with it's own shopping mall, bars etc that there was no need. Went on a couple of excursions, one to the main town, passed through parts that I wouldn't have fancied stepping off the coach but that's a bit unfair, it didn't seem lawless.

The main reason for going the DM has to be for the sun and beach, felt completely safe at all times, go for it, give yourselves something to look forward to.

I know someone who was attacked with a machete when her and her husband walked along the beach in the Dominican.
Didn’t stop us going but we didn’t leave the hotel complex at all.

Should have said it was 11 years ago when we went, the locals we encountered were great but this was only within the complex or tourist ventures. they were very uncomplimentary about the Haitians, reckoned they were streaming across and causing unemployment etc, maybe that has escalated in recent times. Maybe look elsewhere, nothing worse than not feeling relaxed when you're on your jollies.

On a personal note, had my first visit to Goa in January, can't wait to get back there but I expect it will be a long time before that happens. I'll be happy with the Canaries if/when we're all safely vaccinanted.
