Holiday advice

I'm not sure if this question should go in here but it is holiday related so I'll give it a go. We should have been going to Majorca in August, myself and the wife have accepted that that isnt going to happen now but last night we overheard the kids talking to each other about how much they were looking forward to going and how excited they were. So the question is, should we break it to them now so they aren't building themselves up meaning it's a bigger crash when we do or leave it and hope that something miraculous happens over the next few months or, probably more likely, they start to work it out for themselves as it gets closer and nothing has really changed?

I was supposed to go on holiday with jet2 on the 26 May balance of £2200 was due on the 21 March having paid a deposit of £250, I went onto my booking on their web site and hit the cancellation button on the 19march so lost my deposit and they confirmed it straight away, lost £250 but didn’t want the hassle of trying to get my money back.

Personally I would not be risking my family to go on holiday this year.

Tell them as soon as you can
I'd say the best time would be at the end of a family meal, but really lay it on that you and Mrs Dan are quite upset about it

We've paid £100 deposit to JET2 for our July holiday and the balance is due start of May
If they don't cancel the flight a couple of days before the deposit is due, we'll cancel and suffer the loss
Again not the end of the world but better than not knowing when we would get the entire amount back

Tell them now.
There will be no foreign holidays in 2020.

This is going to change the travel industry for ever.

People pay extra for using a company like TUI over doing it your self as they see it as the safer option , but they appear to be the worst at trying to slime out of REFUNDS.

Agents like travel republic are a nightmare too as then your arguing between them and say the flight provider who owes you the refund.

I think a lot of people certainly in the near future won't book months in advance as they won't want to be faced with flights being stopped again for what ever reason.

I never get why people don't do flights and hotels themselves . Pay on credit card and have good.insurance not the cheapest £5 one you can find a proper insurance is about £100 a year .

People will be looking at low deposits in the future a lot more and paying balance few weeks before travel.

Suppose am quite lucky my 3k holiday has a £100 deposit rest due in few weeks am just gonna wrote off the £100 , not a chance am paying 2900 to fight for 100, although am.sure I would get it back.eventually.

As people have said its out and out theft . No one wants to see these business go bust as all.competition is good for prices but doesn't make what their doing right.

As a side note I used to work.for a travel.company and it would.amaze you how little they make per booking. If people cancelled and lost their deposits that would make them more than if u paid up and the holiday went ahead, but it was Thomas cook I worked for so probably not best business model .

I was happy to 're book my flights for next year but with Ryanair it's not even on sale so I'l.take the 're fund looked at swapping to sep and it's treble.the price so no thanks
One reason why diy holidays are not a good idea is that flights booked direct with an airline are uninsured if the airline goes bust. ATOL does not cover it and neither does the majority of travel insurance policies.

Just didn't pay, I did try to get through but no chance.

Wasn't an expensive break total £800 for me & Mrs Moon with £700 of it to pay. However, we'll not be traveling in October even if the world is a bit safer than now. There's no chance I'm taking my wife with a shit immune system on a plane for some time yet.

If they do come after me in the future I'll worry about it then but, as far as I could see non-payment works as a cancellation as such.

Thanks, think I will go down the same route.

Not sure that's quite right, my flight only booking with TUI was covered. I think some are but I don't know the criteria.

Anyway, use a credit card and it doesn't matter. With insurance as well you're then covered for hotel costs if you can't get there or delayed.

Edit, looking at the CAA website, I'm still none the wiser.

ATOL protection
UK and European law says your holiday must be protected if you book a package holiday. ATOL is a UK financial protection scheme and it protects most air package holidays sold by travel businesses that are licensed in the UK.

The scheme also applies to some flight bookings - usually those where you book flights (including UK domestic flights) but do not receive your tickets immediately. This is most common with charter flights, but can also apply to discounted scheduled flights or where you pay for flights in installments.

Please note that ATOL does not apply to holidays or flights booked directly with scheduled airlines or to flights booked with airline ticket agents.

Paragraphs 2 & 3 seem to contradict each other, but I've never received tickets when booking online. Just usually confirmation then the ability to check-in and print boarding passes nearer the time.

I think the majority will be doing this.
