With the 25 man squad being confirmed today it got me thinking.

Next season i think it is likely we will be without Richard Wright, Gareth Barry and Joleon Lescott.

Is it time we start thinking about bringing through some top English/British talent

It was only a few years ago we had an abundance of English talent... now we are lucky to have two players making the squad.

I imagine next year we will only have... Hart, Richards, Rodwell, Milner , Gudietti (does he count?)... missing anyone out!?

Is it time for the EDS to start pushing talent through or will we be forced to dip in to the market?

To be honest i'm quite ignorant to the latest crop of English youngsters, so, who is out there? and is there anyone who could actually improve us??

To put it bluntly no there isn't! There are lots of players who are talked about as the next big thing but when you look at the pressures of the Prem there are not many opportunities to give young players game time. Barkley, Townsend and James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw have all played well at the start of this campaign. Shaw is a player that we may be interested in to fill the left back slot, I actually think he has the talent to play further forward, indeed many Saints fans see him as better than Bale was at that age. He is getting lots of games which is important, and I would hate for us to buy him and not play him simply to meet the quota of Home grown players.

I think young Will Hughes at Derby has been another one we have looked at but again it is whether we can give him regular playing time. If you look at the U21s and below for England most are at Spurs/Chelsea/Rags and have been loaned about to other clubs. I do believe if they have been in our academy or EDS for a certain amount of time they qualify as homegrown so perhaps Pozo would count? Guidetti must do.

Home grown rule - Pozo, Lopes, Guidetti

British talent - Huws, Evans

Will Hughes at Derby appears to be the hottest youth property at the moment

You've got a few decent young players at academy level haven't you? I still think the issue is that the top clubs buy up the best talent but never give them game time. Would be a shame for some of the young talent to be bought up and move elsewhere. Good to see Ince stay and get game time rather than move elsewhere. Zaha's dream move has seen him have no impact whereas he could be playing everygame for Palace and really improve. Good to see Barkley at Everton making the most of his opportunity and also the lads at Southampton i mentioned. Spuds have got a number of good young players who they loan out for game time which is good. Will have to see what has happened to Powell since he left Crewe and played next to no time at the rags. Should get an opportunity at Wigan.

These are the British players in our academy:

Alex Nimely
Harry Bunn
Adam Drury
Emyr Huws
Alex Henshall
Kieran Kennedy
George Glendon
Ian Lawlor
Louis Hutton
Jordy Hiwula
George Evans
Shay Facey
Devante Cole
Greg Leigh
Ellis Plummer
Ashley Smith-Brown
Dominic McHale
George Swan
Angus Gunn

I've never seen any of them play tbh but thats 19 players, at least 1 of them must be good enough? Heard alot of good things about Cole and Evans so hope to see them play against Wigan in the League Cup.

Yep we've got loads, the idea being 2 or 3 per season are elevated to the first team. Current squad of "homegrown" is: Sterling, Wisdom, Ibe, Gerrard, Kelly

With the likes of: Suso, Chiravella, Canos, Mclaughlin, Rossiter to come through in the next few years. Not necessarily British but will qualify as homegrown due to being at the club the requisite number of years.

Our Academy has taken 5 or 6 years of graft to get it to this stage...the big thing about having an academy is letting the youth have opportunities. Something we do at LFC and arguably at the Spurs/Manure's of this world...City & Chelsea are two examples where Youth rarely gets a chance...certainly of late anyway

These are the only English players I can realistically see coming in and improving us

Leighton Baines
Luke Shaw
Jack Wilshere
Ross Barkley
Will Hughes
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Daniel Sturridge

we should seriously consider signing Luke Shaw but other than that I don't think there is any quality player other than Wilshere, Barkley and maybe Lallana that is currently playing premiership football (under the age of 26)!! We can only hope that technically gifted british youngsters under the age of 20 exist in academy's so we can poach them!!
