Homeschooling during lockdown

Just trying to get through it unscathed. At the stage where if we do one of the school tasks per day I’m happy with that. Would maybe be different if I only had one wee one but with the two of them squabbling more the longer this goes on I’m just happy when it’s time for them to fuck off to bed!

Another day done. Eggsperiment was a raging success. I'm looking forward to learning all about food chains in the next fortnight.

My (nearly) 3 year old granddaughter Lilly was born and lives in the Czech Republic. Her mother is Czech and that's Lilly's first language. She is now learning English too and sounds "proper northern." Makes me smile ;-). Hopefully she will be proficient in both within the next couple of years.
When there are two parents who speak different languages; if one speaks to the child solely in one language from birth, and the other solely in another language from birth, the child will learn both languages and be equally fluent in both.

That's brilliant to know, thank you. ;-)
Lilly's parents (unfortunately) split up just a year after her birth, but my son is trying to now instill some english into their contacts. It's been a long haul, particularly with lockdown there, but they are getting there now with their weekly contact.

Threw the towel in yesterday they gave us a 40 min video on adaptation of humans and animals, you had to stop the video and write stuff down every 5 mins, it would’ve took us 2 hours, my daughter had zero interest it was 2pm we wouldn’t have finished until 4pm.
They are sending out the curriculum that is expected at school, not at home. I’ve taken the decision to bin off all this sort of stuff and concentrate on reading, spelling, maths and practising her handwriting, everything else is going in the bin. It’s no fun and it’s starting to show with my daughter now, we are trying to cram so much in, it feels like we are completing stuff for sake of it instead of actually learning it’s just a tick in the box,, a bit like adult life really as long as some jobsworth can say they’ve ticked it off it doesnt matter if youve actually understood it.
All the kids will be at varying stages but as long as she has the main things I’ll be happy when she goes back, chatting to some other lads last night and they all say the same, the schools are trying to run schools at home instead of adapting the lessons to compensate for this, I really feel for those who have kids of differing ages and have to work from home as well.

I’m finding the problem is my youngest who’s nursery age more than the school age kids. It’s really difficult to keep her occupied whilst the other

We’ve got 11, 9 and 6 year olds and the work set is a mixture of worksheets and then pretty broad topics they’ve to go away and research, then talk about in a google class meet. They each get 45-60m a day in meetings in small groups with their teacher.

What’s been good is the school has asked parents to volunteer to give talks that the kids might find useful. I’ve done some basic tax lessons using the HMRC online tools with a few groups as well as teaching my 9 year old’s class the Greek alphabet.

It is difficult to fit my own job around it all though. I end up doing my work meetings around the kids stuff as much as possible and then work more evenings and weekends to catch up.
My wife’s a teacher herself but is ending up in school 4 days a week with the number of kids still coming in and number of teachers off sick.

So it’s half term next week can’t wait think the following Monday I’ll take a teacher training day isn’t that how it works! Got to pick up next terms pack on Thursday and I’m losing the enthusiasm now, coming off nights doesn’t help either. Sooner they go back the better.

I couldn't agree more
