Homophobia in football

Yet weirdly go on marches supporting Islam, it's way more complicated than that. Gay people are people as are Muslims it's their political wings that can get in the bin.
Would you say the same about unions? How about women?

I'm sure you'd like the world better if people who were different than you just sat there quietly.

I will say keep it out of sport yes, if you want a march have a march and if I support your views I may or may not let that be known. I however will not wear anything that someone orders me to wear.

WTF have women got to do with this? You reach that much one of these days you're going to fall flat on your face.

I have a similar opinion to the taking the knee and poppies. If players want to show support with rainbow laces/armband then great. If not its a free country and forcing everyone to wear it lessens its impact anyway tbh. Think everyone is a bit tired of constant identity politics and want sport to be free of that, but on the other hand football and activism have always been intertwined.

Guess I've said a whole lot of nothing here really. Ah well

By refusing to wear the armband on the grounds of their religious identity, Morsy, Guehi, and Mazraoui have only further entrenched the presence of identity politics in football.

Yeah what a great idea to keep racism and LGBT issues out of a sport where they still exist to this day. Also to everyone here saying the player shouldn’t be forced to have the armband. So if tomorrow a player says they don’t like the team jersey and refuse to wear it, then it’s okay? What if a club’s main jersey is rainbow coloured and a player refuses to wear it because of “religious reasons”? I would like to see the reactions then. Standing up for inclusion is not political or personal- it’s just the right thing to do. If that’s too much for you, maybe you need to rethink your priorities.

Players shouldn't be FORCED to wear any political symbol ever. Progressiveness is the new fascism.

The flag is political and nobody should be forced to wear it, do you think people should be forced to wear it?
So if a player doesn’t like the color of their team’s jersey suddenly, do you think they should be forced to wear it? I am pretty sure the club would tell them to do one. Why is the flag political btw? I am genuinely curious.

Yet another thing you're just not understanding.

None of Morsy, Guehi, or Mazroaoui were forced to wear the armband. The very fact that they had the choice of whether to wear it or not and chose not to is exactly why we're having this discussion.

Players can choose not to wear armbands supporting LGBT people if they want. However, upon making that choice, it then shouldn't be a surprise that they're criticised for it. You're making things up again.

And for the record, LGBT rights shouldn't be a political thing. Live and let live, empathy, understanding, etc. are basic tenets of a functioning society. Supporting LGBT rights falls under that umbrella.

I don't think rainbow laces and armbands are necessarily about winning over homophobes though. It's about making space for more people to enjoy the game by making them feel safe and welcome. Homophobes will always exist but these initiatives are useful in drowning out their voices with positive messaging
There can be all kinds of virtue signaling without placing the players in the firing line for choosing their beliefs over those of the PL.

There's clearly not a general acceptance in football. And judging by a lot of posts on here, and that I've had through watsapp groups, I'm not sure society is as tolerant as it might appear either.

We're not getting beaten over the head with it. It's not rammed down our throats continuously. It's a rainbow armband on the captain's arm. That's it. If people feel that's too much then clearly there isn't the acceptance or tolerance in football or indeed society.

You say you have friends who are gay and that you are tolerant. But there's someone on this thread who is gay and telling you their position on the matter and like I said, it's simply about showing people who are LGBTQ that football is inclusive so they play the game and/or watch it. Nothing drastic or offensive in that at all.
Have never claimed it was “drastic or offensive.” I have said it impinges on a footballers right to play football without having to carry a political football around.

We are ALL talking about two players. TWO!

One who refused to wear it and another who felt he had to deface it with a religious message, to show the world his religion trumped the message.

Why are we putting players in these positions?

Can the PL and clubs, through their ONGOING actions not signal to the community that they are open and welcoming?

Where does MY choice end and YOUR choice usurp it? (Both of those are figurative choices, not my personal or your personal choices)

"It is up to individuals to choose if and how they show their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport." — Stonewall.

It couldn't be clearer. The operative word, as I said in an earlier post, is choose.
And now, I'm out of this particular thread, because I've got nothing more to usefully add to the debate.
