Homophobia in football

Just saw this:

Religion is so messed up. You can be openly homophobic if you want as long as you hide behind “religious reasons”.

Religion is fucking stupid, but it’s not homophobic to not wear that armband. Just a choice that he’s free to make.

I wouldn’t wear one because I don’t like outside gimmicks being forced into football. I don’t think there should be poppies on shirts, rainbow flag games. And, like Wilfred Zaha, I wouldn’t kneel down for the racism gimmick because it achieves absolutely nowt.

Fans and players are there for the football, nothing more nothing less.

Maybe it's because there are some guys on the team who refuse to do perform a simple gesture like wear a rainbow armband and a bunch of fans who apparently "believe" being gay is morally wrong, e.g. this thread.
The answer, perhaps unintentionally, is in your response.

“Perform”

That’s what it is…performative virtue signaling.

I could not care less what someone does in the privacy of their own bedroom or home or car or wherever they choose to express their love. However, forced, performative shows of “support” look, feel, and are strained beyond belief.

I work with a large number of members of the gay community. Doesn’t bother me a bit until it’s so “in your face” that it feels performative and purposely in your face. But, I also fully embrace the freedom to be oneself, within reason in the professional workplace.

As for the dressing room, I’d venture NO-ONE could care less, but the media scrutiny and non-stories that would come out of the woodwork are simply a sideshow that no-one craves.

Sadly, the “lad culture” that follows the men’s game is the problem. Indeed, one is often surprised when a professional female footballer marries a guy instead of another girl…yet no-one seems to care about lesbian footballers!

It’s not being gay that is the problem, it’s “real men’s” attitude towards it! That only serves to pollute the freedom to which we should all aspire for everyone.

Freedom to be oneself should be universal, no?
Respecting those who gave their life’s for your freedoms should be respected by all, No?

Anyway that’s for another thread ….

Not even sure that there is a gay “community” actually. I've known gay people who wouldn't go on a pride march. Not because they're not “out”, just because they dislike being in crowds of any kind, and they dislike the performative aspect of “marches”, whether for this, that or the other. I've also known gay people who loathe the singles bar scene. The point is that gay people I've known have been all sorts of stripes. They just happen to have a different sexuality to me.
Agree with your post, by the way.

Donald Trump thinks it's for "suckers and losers" and he's the putative leader of the free world.

Most people have their own opinions, just because some famous people have weird views attributing those values to other people is stupid it's lazy and trying to shame people into thinking the way you think.

As for Trump, he's the president of the good ol' USofA.

Instead of these empty gestures I think we should be questioning why , as we approach the year 2025, there are still next to no openly gay footballers. We should be questioning why they are afraid to be open about their sexuality. That is the scandal here and not someone refusing to wear an armband
You're so close.

I feel the same way about those who talk about owning handguns.

I could not care less what someone does in the privacy of the gun range or home or car or wherever they choose to carry their weapon. However, forced, performative shows of “support” look, feel, and are strained beyond belief.

I work with a large number of people who own guns. Doesn’t bother me a bit until it’s so “in your face” that it feels performative and purposely in your face. But, I also fully embrace the freedom to own a gun, within reason outside the professional workplace.
