Homophobia in football

“Homosexual one way or the other.” I’m fairly certain there’s just the one way.
:)

I meant male:male or female:female. I'm not sure what the appropriate terminology is these days.

Edit: It's not my fault I can't keep up, here there are different words for men who prefer men who identify as men, men who prefer men who identify as women, women who prefer women who identify as women and women who prefer women who identify as men. It's a minefield.

Ha ha ha. I know. Used to be so much easier: straight or a bandit!

No, I'm saying I don't understand the need to announce your sexual preferences to the world. Nor why anyone should care about what it is.
I don’t think it’s about “announcing it”. Straight players don’t “announce” their sexuality, they display it by turning up at ceremonies or a night out with the latest WAG on their arm.
Sadly if a player turned up with a bloke on his arm the reaction would be different.

No top elite footballer is going to come out, it would cost him a fortune in loss of endorsements etc, regardless of the difficult headlines and media attention.

Someone I know well and trust that works high up in football told be about a ex rag player who was gay, he went on to become one of the most famous players in the game, got "married" and "had kids" but it was all a business arrangement as he had enormous endorsements of tens of millions a season. Still in the game and still has the pretending lifestyle.

We've all suspected Beckham for years...

Exactly.

Worst case scenario.

A male Premier League player turns up to an event with his male partner, three things happen. The MSM gutter press would be all over them, not in the fire and brimstone fashion of yesteryear, but in constant intrusive articles about both of them, particularly if the player was signed to a high profile club. Their private lives would be over, the pressure would never end, constant attempts would be made to get the player and his partner to make a statement of some sort, his team mates would be expected to show support, as would his manager, and woe betide them if the MSM judges them insufficiently effusive. Overnight this player would no longer be a footballer, he'd be the gay footballer.

Social media would be all over it, endless bollocks about them would be spouted.

And the politics of it would kick in, pressure groups, from the legit to the downright wacky, would seek to co-opt him whether he wanted it or not.

Or maybe nothing out of the ordinary would happen.

I suspect not knowing which way it would pan out, goes a long way to explaining why it's not happened.

Spot on. The player then becomes “a role model” (how I dislike that term) for every gay person on the planet, rather than just someone who wants to go and play football with his team mates.

I know this one, everyone knows this one.
