Homosexuality in football: Three players speaking to FA about coming out, says MP

Can't we just have one day off from the agenda ffs. What about addressing equality for women, poverty, famine, equality for all races, child abuse, there's people starving to death and all the crap of the world going on and yet we go again....
Could not agree more. According to the last census 0.05% of the population are gay. So? What about all those starving kids in Yemen? Why is this even under discussion?

Let them come out. None of my business

This. I could not care less what a footballer, or anyone else for that matter, gets up to in his or her bedroom. It's nothing to do with me and it's a shame that they feel they should need to be "out". I worked with someone on a secondment for 6 months and never knew he was gay until I spoke to a mutual friend and they mentioned his boyfriend. I was asked how did I not know and, though we'd spoken about things outside work and been out for team lunches, I never gave it a second thought. I'd much prefer it if it wasn't an issue and people weren't so obsessed with what goes on in people's private lives.

I too, think the reaction may be kinder than they think.

I don`t think its an obsession but I agree with the rest of your post. When I was working a s a Training Advisor for the TECS we had a couple of gay people and they really were two wonderful people.
I would sincerely hope that ALL the media hacks give these players (and all others) their blessing and forget any "scoop stories" regarding their private lives. Its not warranted and only stokes up the fires for some of those backward fans.Just let those 8% fuck off under a rock.

I agree about the 8%, meant to mention that, but as someone else said, I think it's bullshit by the fans who said they would stop going. If they do though good riddance.

Obsession may be the wrong word, maybe replace with interest. My point is that it should not matter one little bit to anyone else whether you choose a same sex partner or not.

I don't want this to be low key. I want to see these footballers bursting out of that closet with hinges flying all over the shop. In fact, if it's one of our guys, I wanna see him running out of that tunnel dressed as Carmen Miranda with a load of fruit on his head.

You actually believe that figure? If so, I've got some magic beans for sale.
Just quoting the census. Why do you think more or less. Impressions will be clouded by watching TV. EG Strictly etc. I still think so what. But in the whole population numbers are tiny. Just gets a great deal of publicity
There are known difficulties in producing reliable estimates of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.

The Integrated Household Survey,[33] published by the Office for National Statistics, provides the following estimates for the adult UK population as at 2011:

  • 1.1 per cent (approximately 545,000 adults at the time of the survey) identify as Gay or Lesbian,
  • 0.4 per cent (approximately 220,000 adults) identify as Bisexual,
  • 0.3 per cent identify as ‘Other’,
  • 3.6 per cent of those surveyed replied ‘Don’t know’ or refused to answer the question,
  • 0.6 per cent of those surveyed provided ‘No response’ to the question.
  • an estimated 2.7 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK identify themselves as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual compared with 0.4 per cent of 65 year olds and over.
Other sources provide alternative estimates of the population by sexual orientation. More stats for you. The numbers have grown since the previous census I was referring to.
