Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

I can remember a sat game at Maine rd v Millwall,I'd got to Manchester a lot later than I normally did( 2.30ish iirc) and got off at platform 14 Piccadilly.

I quickly made my way up and down stairs to the main platform exit.

I noticed a train on platform 4 or 5 with lots of fans getting off..I suddenly realised I was heading ,very quickly towards Millwalls crew, just off the Euston train..,who in turn were being met by a huge Police escort..I wasn't wearing any colours apart from a pin badge..

I tried to discreetly slow right down, without visibly stopping..but it was no good, I had already advanced too far too fast...I quickly decided that the best thing to do was simply join the very end of the Millwall away crew and keep my mouth shut.

So there I was, being marched, with Millwall, by the police through Piccadilly station, out main entrance, down the ramp, sharp left at the bottom, marching towards Mancunian way..I hadn't a clue what was gonna happen next but I knew a false move would end up with cops telling me to get in line...or worse.

The escort brought Mancunian Way to a standstill as the crew crossed the road..I thought there's no way I'm marching all the way to Maine rd
with this lot...as everyone assembled on the other side of MW.. the escort started up again..I held back, and when police ( hopefully)weren't looking I walked quickly back across the busy road, dodging traffic like a maniac.

Phew!

Me and my mate went to wolves away it was a Sunday game and couldn't get in a couple of pubs as we had away tickets so decided to go shop and got 4 cans each and sat on the wall drinking them not bothering anyone and the plod came over in a van 2 dibble got out asked who we supporting and told them city and then took cans off us and poured the cans down the drain and got back in the van,the thing that really wound me up was the **** smiling as he was doing it...
The odd lot are bullies

The first derby I ever went to was in 85 and after the match we were on the top deck of the bus going past Whitworth Park, and I couldn't believe the amount of people standing in the park, I asked my dad what was going on and he told me it was City waiting for United, never forgotten that

Barnsley away one year behind the stand at half time. Never seen anything like it. Police v City fans. It seemed to escalate into a war.

Also remember macneil coming on the pitch that day pleading with the man City fans to pack it in with what we were doing,, basically wrecking the place lol
Yeah . He went up into that little box

Remember him going up into that little glass spotter box in the top corner of city`s end to make a appeal for the fans to behave . We were in with the home fans in the side paddock . Long time ago now , but i think we climbed over the wall at the opposite end to city`s to gain entry . Plenty of blues in there . Got very heated at times as city fans were calling the home support scabs as the miners strike wasn`t long over .

I only caught the tail end of proper organised mayhem but it must be so hard for young fans to understand what being a match going fan was like in the 80s.
It really was running the gauntlet.

I remember newcastle coming down in 85 when we missed out on promotion and they brought thousands.
Beat us 2-1 i think?

It was just off the scale violence around maine road after. I can vividly recall being in traffic with mobs just leathering shit out of each other . A transit van trapped in traffic with geordies in it having all its windows smashed in and bricks thrown at the occupants

The hoolies of today just dont compare

I think this started because people were kicking off because they'd run out of beer or something at half time,I remember people coming back up into the stand covered in blood and lost kids being paraded held up by stewards on the pitch!

I remember that ! Not sure what was said , either by the city fans or the women serving . But a number of city fans started throwing grit off the floor at the women serving and it escalated rapidly from there as you say awest . Was it a League Cup game ?
