Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

when i said "we" i meant me and my mates.
we didn't go for the fighting,
but we were happy to join in with you guys when it happened.
as you say, changed our world, brother.
Exactly the same as us. 8 or 10 of us from Blackpool. Didn't go looking for trouble but if it happened we were there. Knew most of the Governors and Young Governors and did travel with them to places like Milwall, WH , Merseyside etc. Happy and very different days.
Still see lots of the lads from those days, scarily all heading to our 60s!!!. Sadly quite a few no longer with us.

Chelsea on a Friday night towards the end of 83/84 season. It was a live TV game and they were heading for promotion, their nutters were all over the place, it even kicked off in the Main Stand.
I was only 16 at the time and had gone with 2 or 3 mates. We left early to avoid trouble but got ambushed in Rusholme by some Chelsea, who I guess hadn't bothered with the game. Ran all the way back to Piccadilly!

Chelsea at one time most feared firm in the country in the 80s, but got spanked in the late 80s by West Ham and Leeds. Also Boro stood there ground at the 88 2nd division play off. A very nasty racist element among their support but has got much more civilised since the noughties. Wife is from SW6 and often reminisce with her cousins about the mad bad old days, nice blokes now but wouldn't have wanted to face them 40 years ago.

Similar age. My little firm of school hard nuts and budding football hoolies got taught a very harsh lesson on the realities of life that night.

Stood wide eyed watching the wooden doors go back and forth at the splat lane then they poured out Chelsea I was 14 but looked about 10, only to be smacked by a 30 year old fat cockney **** , fair play to a couple of other Chelsea fans picked me up dusted me down …

Walked back town with an escort of Chelsea that was constantly looking neet attack …. First and not the last time I copped for a crack at a game .

I wouldn't have them down as one of the most feared in the 80s, no doubt they put it about a bit around the time as did others, they, or should i say, talk of them seems to dine out on the Friday night match although it didn't entirely all go their way.

They have also endued some right mares' coming to Maine Road.

They attracted a lot of saps n glue sniffing hanger-on's that would swell their numbers at times whilst out for a jolly up rather than actually frontin' up n following through, they did indeed have some heavy hitters within their ranks who were known on the national team scene n political.

Outside of that though, they were basically viewed as the 'Leeds of the south' n looked upon with distain for preying upon moo moo's, shirters n normals, thrashing Londis convenience stores n corner shops, BT telephone boxes, BR train carriages, The London underground etc et-cetera ...unlike most other 'law abiding football hooligans' that sought out like-minded participants n followed a code of conduct (scousers excluded) within the national chosen past time. ;-)

Chelsea banned but a small mob of punk type Chelsea turn up pogoing about near the ticket office / main stand forecourt. Chanting Chelsea - Utd will never be defeated/ cam on u cants.

City just looking on rolling around laughing.

Was it a mad dream? too many drugs?
