Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

A mob of Cambridge turned over Chelsea in the mid 80's.
Didn't Chelsea smash, the place up the year before, and this was revenge. Remember at the time they had been recruiting lads, who weren't normally football lads, but some businesses who had been robbed, suffered damage etc, were behind the recruiting, think there were even story's at the time of lads being paid to turn out that day.

I only know of two Cambridge fans and they’re both nutters that have been fighting at grounds for years. One is about 50 now and looks like Mick Hucknall but he’s a right handy ****.

I wonder if his excuse for brawling with other fans would be...'something got me started' when he said I was a dead ringer for Charlie Drake?

Anyone remember [manager of popular beat combo New Order] Rob Gretton at City during the 70's and 80's?

I've heard him described as a 'Kippax Street Hooligan' in the past, but whether this was just Tony Wilson and friends exaggerating or accurate I've never been too sure.

Then there was the tale about him and other City fan Mike Pickering's first meeting. This was before Factory and Joy Division, so probably mid 70's. Gretton had got himself into some trouble at Forest, decided it would be best to make a quick exit. Jumped over a wall into someone's garden to hide, quickly followed by someone else who'd had the same idea and that was Pickering.
I remember Rob at City every week. He drank in The Gardners Arms, sometimes with Pickering, Paul Gallagher and other Factory bods.

Wilson was obsessed with him but I think he meant “hooligan” as in loudmouth rather than being in any firm. The Forest story is true though.

I remember Tony. Sorry Anthony Wilson so much when his team won the FA cup in 85 on Granada report s he said wasn't that better than beating Charlton then in 96 when his team won the fa cup and we were relegated on a music program he praised oasis but finished the sentence with " what a shame they are pathetic City fans " hopefully they have sky sports in hell and he is aware of our tremendous achievement s

Could never stick that Anthony Wilson , arrogant tw@t .... the guy was full of himself.

H'e a bit like that other arrogant and smug cretin, Terry Christian .... what a clueless rag prick he is!

Remember that prick Wilson laughing on Granada Reports when we had a goal disallowed at Derby for being after the ref had blown for time. You shouldn't speak ill of the dead but for that t**t I'll bmake an exception.

Ha ha that made me laugh out loud. Maybe he took the hit Holding back the years too seriously. There used to be a right nutter in Manchester years ago who looked like Hucknall and was always fighting, he went to Altrincham ice rink on occasion. Rumour had it he shot his best mate with a shotgun and he died but got off with it as he said it was an accident, but no idea if it was true, no one dared ask him.

I remember when Wilson got chased out of The Rusholme Chippy. Someone came in The Clarence and said they had just seen him go in. So a few of us went across and gave him some verbal about some snide comment he had made about City. There was no threatening or in his face stuff and no time was anyone going to attack him but he did one and left his Chips.
