Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Do you remember the game at Maine Road against Chelsea, Friday night live on TV in the old Division 2, very tasty atmosphere, they hammered us on the pitch and it was going off everywhere in the ground.

Yes I remember that game. I was living and working in Dover at the time. In our digs was a Chelsea headhunter who went up that night, he said it was mental. After the game they went into a chippy on princess parkway and it kicked off again and he said the police sent a dog in that he thinks was kicked to death as it was attacking everyone.

I was in the North Stand that night, one of the few times I was genuinely scared during a game.

Horrible, aggressive and intimidating atmosphere, going off everywhere, I was happy to happy to get home in one piece that night.

They brought thousands to Maine Road that night as I think a victory almost guaranteed them promotion as they were running away with the league.

People talk about the ICF and the likes but for me Chelsea were the top London firm in the late seventies and early eighties. They took it everywhere.

There was an estimated 20,000 City fans at Newcastle that day, basically sited all around the ground ..... three of my my next door neighbours went up in their van, and said that City fans were everywhere.

The worst time for us as fans at Newcastle was in a 3-1 win for City in an FA Cup cup tie up there ..... prolonged fighting/crowd trouble in the ground meant that a lot of City fans left the ground early, some at half time, it was a really hostile atmosphere up there that day ..... not certain of the year, but i think that game was played during Gary Owens playing days.

That game’s been talked about at length on this thread. Maybe 10 or 20 pages back.

That sounds familiar...years ago in my supporters club days I 'remember being on a coach back from a game and a Blue, forgot his name was recalling stories of visits to st James Park.
I was only about 20 yrs old at the time and the bloke who was telling the tale was older, a right big unit..he said on that night ,Away fans were queuing to get in,and geordies were pulling select City fans out of the queue for a bashing....he said the miners were looking for only the biggest lads, they didn't take me! I gulped.
I think that story more than any other made me realise Newcastle was not a place to mess about at,back in the late 70s.

I got a slapping on plat lane that night while waiting for some mates.
I kicked the fuck out of one near platfeilds park later on as his mates legged it.
It wasn't the first time I had problems with the fuckers I had a good kicking down there ground on a visit previously

Amazingly came unstuck at Cambridge of all places, and Leeds and Boro went to the Bridge and gave them a right seeing to in the 80s. Like our neighbours they liked big numbers and easy targets.

I remember the Spurs game when we beat them 5-0 & relegated them. Didn't they arrive late & came in the top of the Kippax before being chased back down the steps?
