Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

You could never go away open minded always had to be on your toes, Brentford away fa cup we got beat 3-1 I think years ago that was a bad time for me and lads again Chelsea turned out, Swindon away in the car park outside the mainstand had it’s moments, Hull away first game of the season is another what goes under the radar, quite a few more aways where we’ve been surprised . Everton at main road have brought some mobs in their time, never forget what we took there though in 85 league cup ( I think) . Proper turn out .

Wasn’t that ‘87? Worst violence I’ve ever seen with city it was mental, I went as a “handy” 18yrd old, but that level of violence was off the scale! scary stuff indeed that night

Just a little off topic, laid flowers at my Mother in Laws grave in Southern on Friday and went past MW's resting place, Mikey was a top lad in many ways always up for making money through ticket touting and many other ways.
It reminded me of the day when all City were in the Bottom Yates Oldham Street and Mikey stood on a stool and tried to get them all to join as one saying "look at this firm no one could touch us", unfortunately the racists scum decided to kick off with him and Mikey and his close friends left, having left a few cuts and bruises on that shower.
2004 Mikey left RIP mate, times just flies.

I’m just about old enough to go to some of the mad games like Everton in League Cup in 87 or when City fans dismantled Boundary Park. But I was only aged around 10 at the time. But I’ve got a question. Could a normal fan who didn’t want to get involved in aggro fan just go to a pub in the city centre or near the ground and mix with the home fans in those days or was it head down in and out job?

Based on my experience of loads of away games from the age of 16 throughout the 70s and most of the 80s (became very infrequent after that) I'd say if weren't actively looking for it you could generally avoid trouble. Has a few close calls, noticeably after the Cup Final v Spurs in 81 (not the replay though I went to that too), but apart from having to throw the odd punch & receiving them on leaving a ground I was never involved in anything major. I saw plenty though so if you were minded to fancy it then you could fill your steel toe capped boots.

Me and mates would go in home pubs but again if you kept it down you were generally OK.

It really was dependent on how luck you were, there were very different kinds of people into hooliganism and some of them were there just for the strays so they could rob them.
