Disagree about LotR, much prefering it tbf, but I was a tolkien fan in my youth and had all the books so probably interests me more and also because they have scope to build on the little works about that period and suprise us with the story arcs.A bit better than the Lord of the Rings. And a lot better than The Wheel of Time.
But worse than many others: The Witcher, First two seasons of The Boys, The Umbrella Academy, The Sandman, First two seasons of Stranger Things.
House of the Dragon is a good watch, but it's not compelling.

The big difference is that this is just a normal TV show - even if an expensive one. Game of Thrones wasn't successful because it had dragons, or magic, or because the 'universe' was uniquely interesting; it stood out because there were so many big storylines running simultaneously, some intertwining, others that wouldn't collide for years - but rarely for more than a few minutes per show, so no time for boredom.Watching it, but hasn't grabbed me enough that I watch it as soon as available unlike GoT, maybe because I already know how the story will go so know the main charactors fate already.
Also even in GoT the starks and lanisters were more interesting and those at court the ones in this like otto etc are dull and without Matt Smith and Milly Alcocks performances it's pretty average.
Maybe when it timeshifts and it gets into dance of the dragons it may peak my interest more.
