How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Funny how it’s changed from taking taking back control and getting freedom from Brussels imposed laws to it’s not that bad for me.

With just one exception I’ve not seen any Brexiteers on here own up to the fact that it’s shit and they made a mistake. Makes this thread a bit pointless to be honest because it’s just a repeat of everything we already knew with the Brexiteers who haven’t disappeared still in denial.

It’s shit and I made a mistake. How’s that for you mate? ;)
Probably easier for me to say it as I was never a rabid Leaver as such but the likes of @blueinsa were more passionate about Brexit and he himself has said since that it’s shit.

Indeed. That’s what’s known as a 1st world problem - earnt a lot, can spend a lot, houses in different countries (uk and eu), then votes for the ending of what he worked hard to achieve - ability to live anywhere in Europe.

Now reduced to max of 90 days in EU, and then has to remain/leave (tish boom) outside for the next 90 days.

how to kill your hard earned wanted lifestyle in one stupid Ill informed way.

it’s not affecting tourists (generally -except see the ‘Manchester airport’ thread), but if you were lucky enough to have that lifestyle… you’ve really been a turkey voting for Christmas.
Obviously their problem is not being rich enough, spend 700k on a property in Malta and with a few formalities you can have your very own EU passport via the Maltese golden visa rules.

He was the one I was thinking of but fair play to you for not staying in denial.

Until a significant proportion own up to the fact they were had there’s no real hope this country will extricate itself from the shit we’ve got ourselves into. I’m not saying we should rejoin any time soon - they wouldn’t have us anyway probably - but we need to mitigate the worst effects of it by at least getting back into the Single Market. That’s the Single Market that Thatcher was instrumental in creating which is another thing the more rabid Brexiteers are in denial about.

Yeah, they (Labour) were way off in 2019 but were only (I think) 17 seats short of a majority in 2017.

You’re right on the last bit - I think it’s only the die hard leavers that are defending it now
Sorry, I meant 2017 not 2019!

Its funny how all the Brexiters who followed the leading lights of that movement are left out of step by the 180's being performed by those leading lights leaving their die hard support as outliers in an increasingly indefensible argument - its ok leading people up a hill but they could have the courtesy to lead them back down again not just abandon them cold and exposed

Not a chance we’d be allowed back in the EU we have burnt to many bridges, however someone needs to push this when and election happens. The pathway the country is on now led by the current government will not deviate from the ice berg we are slowly hitting. It’s going to get even more painful in October when the fuel bills hit even more.

sure is - the thing is to get even a toe back in the EU door will mean we have to negotiate with the EU and persuade 27 member states to accept us....something we haven't been able to do - all we have done is illustrate that we are not worth negotiating with as our word cannot be trusted

Of course we would get membership again. On their terms of course which I’m now of the opinion given our government wouldn’t be a bad thing but membership would be a given and welcomed.

A leadership vote might suddenly wake up the Tory’s that didn’t want brexit but could put together a cabinet that maybe to move us away from the course we are on. Doubt it though, only way this gets sorted is at the ballot box, the pm knows the reaction from the public over the last few days is a barometer to how the electorate see him. A kicking in by elections by the end of the month will confirm it.

For sanity to return, we need a GE and for either a lot of these one Parliament UKIP-shilled Tories to either not stand or be beaten by politicians with morality. (A long shot, I know)

Get the likes of Rory Stewart and Dominic Grieve back in, so that there is gravitas and decency, whoever is in power.

I think more people than you think know that it has been a shit show. It’s just not a common topic of discussion these days as other things have dominated the headlines such as the pandemic, the cost of living crisis (yes, part of that is down to Brexit), and the war in Ukraine. So I’d say it’s up to the politicians to make that decision about re-joining the Single Market. Granted, it’s unlikely that the current lot in charge will do it but a future Conservative leader might. Or if Labour are in with a shout of winning the next election (as they should be) Starmer needs to include it in his manifesto.

I wouldn’t be against a second referendum myself but maybe it’s too soon after the event for that to be a consideration.

I pointed out to Ric that Corbyn wasn’t a million miles off winning in 2017. Who knows what Brexit we would’ve got if he’d got in? That said, Corbyn had a history of being anti-EU during his political career but I doubt that he would’ve proposed anything remotely resembling a hard Brexit
It’s a socialist stance to be anti-EU. To socialists, the EU is a big corporation and bigger-GDP-country fantasy entity. The EU keeps the richer countries rich, drains talent and resources from poorer countries and takes them to the richer ones, making the poorer countries even poorer. Proper socialists have always been anti-EU, Corbyn being one of them.

It might be similar to Ceferin’s words when he welcomed City back after we pulled out of the ESL!
The UK left by itself tho, it would only be the same if the Uk had left with France Germany and Spain to form a new bloc, only for the UK to return to the EU. I doubt Cerefin would have been as welcoming had City just left by ourselves and then returned with its tail between its legs.

True. I still think we’d be welcomed back though (the UK that is, not City)

Boris and his wankers wanted Brexit so badly and were willing to lie so brazenly to the British public about the Benefits of leaving. I remain convinced they just did not want anyone in the EU asking questions or holding them accountable for any of the shady shit they are doing. Now they hold all the power and can pretty much brush anything under the carpet without much blowback.

There are zero benefits for us. We were lied to and we can do absolutely nothing about it now.
Boris was a Remainer for a long time. He’s just a populist who just goes along with whatever will benefit himself most.
