The people I was speaking to are also lawyers whose expertise lies in European migration law, so for them it was to be a bittersweet trip.
I’ve just checked with the wife (she’s German).
She always uses a passport to get into the UK because she doesn’t have an ID card. That’s where I got confused. But yeah, it seems an ID was enough
 
Did you actually need to show a passport for immigration clearance or was that just the photo ID you used to board your flight?

Got the ferry to Dun Laoghaire * a few years ago and didn’t need to show passports either way

Ryanair, which I would take to Standsted, required a passport.

We didn’t have ID cards so would always bring it going to Manchester too.

I have a vague recollection of flying into Southend Airport on an Aer Lingus owned airline once without a passport. I think I only had a drivers licence and hadn’t a problem.
